Been noticing lately there are people driving around with completely rusted hoods- that look weathered and rusty- on newer cars.

Some VW golfs, lancers, and other randoms.

Is this a new thing ?? Why would you want to do that to a perfectly good paint job ? What’s the look your going for ? Rat rod ?? Help me understand bros

I've noticed it too. I just thought it was lazy guys who replaced damaged hoods with bare steel replacements and never bothered to paint.

Now it seems like there are too many of them around to not be a trend.

It's called patina, and it's popular in the VW world, at least from what I remember when I quietly followed that scene for a couple of years. There are some good vids on how it's done on YouTube.

Yeah, but they do it to new cars too and it looks kinda weird IMO, especially when they do just a bonnet or doors but leave the rest painted OEM. I guess it's gotten even more popular in the last 10 years based on your OP.

I was part of a car group where people would pour muriatic acid on their hood to remove the paint so they could drive around with the rusty look
