Is there any chance for an air leak in the intake tube that is between the MAF and the throttle body? I've seen those big rubber tubes get old and crack open.. That triggers an air flow discrepancy between the MAF and the intake that comes across like a bad MAF. While not the same car, I have three vehicles that literally have the same symptoms from a bad MAF. In fact, you need to keep one foot on the brake and another on the accelerator at stoplights to keep the motor running when in D.

Like Toyota, they will not run properly with anything but a Genuine OEM MAF and engine coils. So I have a new member of my auto family here with the same tastes in engine management components as its stablemates. I like Toyota. I understand their quirks.

I ordered a new Toyota MAF sensor that should be here early next week. I havnt heard any vacuum leaks but I know the hoses are original so I will see about replacing those and checking for any cracks

I'm betting you will find it. I've been there. That's the reason I systematically replace so many hoses during a mid-life refresh.

as to your observation on the rear O2 sensors flucuations... it should be relativly steady. If the rear o2 sensor highs and lows mimic the front 02 sensor almost instantly then a P0420 Catalytic Convertor efficiency code is not far behind. The convertor converts exhaust gases, duh, but mostly it stores O2 used to burn, hence the use of 02 sensors.

Have you checked your cats with a temp gun? The rear of cat should be about 100 degrees hotter then the front of the cat. This should confirm your cats are working properly.

I haven’t read the entire thread, but my guess is the throttle position sensor. Mine was giving me a similar problem a while back, it acted up on me for a couple years before I figured out what it was. :anonymous:

Do we have a recommended way to test the TPS?

I tested mine with an oscilloscope and it passed, but it was a super intermittent issue, so even though it passed that one time, it was still the problem.

What brand of scanner did you use that told you the trims were bad? (I'm going to pop for one pretty soon.)

    Thank you, sir!

I just checked, and the price stated was $29.95. Then I clicked on your link, and the price was $34.99.... :notsure:

MAF sensor is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I will let everyone know if it works. Boy, it was bad this morning trying to get to work. Stuttering like crazy driving in.

No. I didn't buy one, just cleaned mine. And it wasn't dirty that I could see. Both wires appeared shiny to me.
I was just wondering about the MAF sensor so I clicked on one of Google's results. That's when I saw the lower price on Amazon. Then I clicked on the higher price. Same identical add but a few bucks more.
I've seen that in the past - varying prices for the same item on Amazon. Usually I see it after I've already bought whatever it was I needed. Oh well...

Or coil pack. Swap cylinder 3 coil pack with any other coil pack, leaving the spark plug still where it is, and reset the MIL and run it again and see if you get same code. If code followed to the cylinder that you moved original #3 coil pack to, then likely looking at coil pack. If code stayed with cyl 3 after swapping the coil pack then likely spark plug

Replaced the MAF sensor with denso, the old one was an aftermarket. Swapped the coil from 3 to 1 and nothing has changed. Plugs all look pretty new. The guy I bought it from promised he switched them all in November. Guessing the coil or possibly injector? It took weeks to throw a code the first time so I’m not counting on it again. Hoping it throws a code showing #1 today

Finally, it threw a code showing cylinder #1. Replacing coil pack today and hoping it’s finally over

Sounds like a solid diagnosis to me. Good work man. That's what I've found to be the most common reasons for the misfire codes with Toyotas.
