Just got a super clean 2017 SR5 V6 2wd 4-door with 33,xxx miles. It seemed that it was in near perfect condition, perfectly maintained, not hammered on and didn't see any off-road use when I first looked at it and test drove it. For some reason I didn't do much research or anything before finally buying this truck, besides going to a few Toyota dealers to look into and test drive some of their used 3rd gen. Tacomas. Seemed like the other Tacomas didn't ride quite as nice as this 2017. At $26k I'm really hoping I made the right decision with this one, and that I'm not missing out by not getting a TRD sport/off-road, of which were all priced much higher. I was told 2016-2019 models are basically the exact same, nothing important has changed over those years. I don't NEED 4wd, and I thought most trucks ride a little better in their 2wd version not having the extra components and unsprung weight? The main reason I'm posting all this is so I can get all the info possible to make sure I got the right Tacoma.
Upgrading from a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4x4, and I have no experience with Toyota trucks, I've only owned Ford Rangers and Explorers. I bought this Tacoma thinking that it's my new long-term "project" truck, and I'll want to throw a good amount of upgrades at it. I do use my trucks off-road some times and I like lots of things on a truck to be geared towards off-road use. I'm still in the process of checking over everything, and verifying everything is how it should be on this truck.
It's had 2 owners, the guy I bought it from did the upgrades to it, which include a DV8 front bumper (fenders and stock bumper had to be cut back a lot, a well-known truck shop did the install), Bilstein 5100 series shocks all around (he claimed they are better than the TRD Pro shocks), TRD Pro black wheels, Cooper a/t tires, and some other smaller things.
I've been checking out the bumper and how they cut the bodywork to make sure it was all done right, so far the only thing I've noticed is both wheel wells (the black inner fenders) are held with a couple zip ties on the front. This is an upgrade where I would be worried about a shop maybe messing something up on a brand new truck because of how much modifying/cutting had to be done.
I found broken glass under the back seat, tinted glass that looks like it was the back window. The guy didn't know anything about this. Not sure if this is something I should look into, but the back window is good and I haven't seen any other signs that a window has been replaced.

Are there any must-do first mods on this truck? I saw the TRD Pro/Raptor grill with running lights upgrade which I like. What about an air filter upgrade or removing the air box snorkel?
I heard the Bilstein shocks are currently on the "low" setting, like they can be adjusted to raise ride height by a couple inches, it might be in the front only. How can I do this?
How often should I change the oil on this truck - up to 5,000 miles like all the other trucks I've owned? (I do 4000-4500 miles) I have the receipt from the last oil change on this Tacoma, just under 4,000 miles ago by a dealer. I know this truck takes synthetic unlike my older Fords, and who makes the best oil filter(s) for it? I liked using Royal Purple filters on my sport Trac because they were noticeably bigger than all the other quality oil filters for that truck.

Welcome! I have an SR5 too and wasn’t sure if I made the right choice by not getting a TRD. But honestly I’m super happy with it. It what was within my budget and I only do light off-roading, so it’s perfect.

The only significant change I’m aware of 16-19 came in 2018 with the addition of Toyota safety sense. Toyota recommends oil changes at 10k.

A lot people ask if they got the right truck . If you are happy that's what counts and the sr5 is a great truck

Sounds like I'll want to do the ovtune and CAI. I want to get the TRD pro aluminum skid plate, assuming it fits with the DV8 bumper on, and there is no air dam for me to remove. but I read something about this skid plate only fitting 4x4 models, is this true or will it work good on my 2wd sr5?

I also want to change the oil in the next ~500 miles, so if cost doesn't matter, what is the best oil and oil filter for this truck? I say "best" because there was a best/favorite oil filter I used on my Explorer (royal purple), a "best" oil I use on my sport bike (motul 300v), and from some videos I've seen, not all higher quality automotive oil filters are made the same/use the same materials. I also think I'll be doing oil changes at 5000 miles on this Tacoma regardless of how good the oil and filter are, unless that would be a complete waste of money and I'd be better off doing 6000+ mile intervals.

Also I want to make use of the go pro mount by the rear view mirror, I think I want a holder for a cell phone to mount on that, does go pro make one? I have yet to find one. Any other ideas to make use of that go pro mount besides a phone/gps holder? I don't have a go pro by the way.
