Doesn't look like they are going to fit horribly though. Shit, If I don't have to too much clearancing I might try stepping up to 15x10 wheels.

Why such wide wheels? 9” max on the wheel width. Anything wider and you’re in mall crawler territory.

If you're asking why I'd got to 15x10 wheels, they would make the stance wider, thus more stable, and from an aesthetic stand point they would make the tire look fatter. @GuyHuey , you have anything to add?

The wheel in the picture is a 15x8.

    Here's an example. 33x12.50r15s on 15x12 wheels...

    83 toy 02.jpg
Back in the day when everybody was running wider tires (15"-18.5") pretty much the only wheels we used were 12-14", but they were only 15-16.5" tall. It's the diameter, IMHO, that makes it a mall crawler wheel. Also, if you look at the recommended wheel width for the tires in the picture above, is say 8.5"-11". I was actually running my LTBs under spec wheel-wise. And I'm not aware of any steel 15" wheel made in a 9" width.

Wider wheels require wider tires which in turn creates drivetrain stress. Wide isn’t always a good thing unless you’re sticking to mud bogging. Maybe I’m not understanding the purpose behind such wide wheels with a 12.5” wide tire, but it has always been taught to me by my dad and uncles who have wheeled for decades before me, that you want a tire with 4” over the wheel width and anything less is not allowing enough sidewall bulge for a proper airdown and creating a potential bead failure issue when aired down below 15psi. When I was on 35’s with 8.5” wheels, I was able to air down to 10psi all the time and never lost a bead or destroyed at CV axle.

I’m also pretty drunk right now, so my accuracy may be skewed.

I wouldn't go wider than 15x8 but then again i like the fact my rims will never see a curb in their life

Like I said, some of it's aesthetics. I like wider tires, and a wider wheel give the illusion of wider tires. There probably is something to what you're kin taught you, given the 36x12.50s I have have a minimum wheel width of 8.5, however the range they specify goes up to 11" . The long and the short of it is that if I could find a 15x9 steel wheel that didn't cost a fortune, I would run them, but my choices are limited at the moment to 8" or 10" and 10" is within the specified recommended range established by Interco.

BTW, @GuyHuey has been running 35x12.50s for a while now on 10" wide wheels and hasn't had bead failure while aired down.

Also, damn you Brian, you reminded me I have a fridge full of beer and now it's sounding like a pretty good way to celebrate the OGTs sexy new shoes. :drunk:

Skinny tires are better off-road 95% of the time, exception is when sand, mud, or snow is deeper than 110% of the vehicle clearance...

Skinny tires cut into the ground. Wide tires create more friction. When the surface is soft and deep then wide tires will "float" better.

But this topic has been beat to death all over the internet so i digress. :boink:

99.9% of Florida is deep sand and bottomless mud. :D This was a wheel width discussion though. ;)

(I disagree with the opening statement. Not gonna debate it though. Like you said... :deadhorse:)

Ball joint spacers and lift blocks, am I doing it right?

I've had the 10inch wide rims since I bought the 4Runner. Never changed them since they worked well, even aired down to 9 psi in the woods. Haven't lost a bead yet.

Yea man lots of opinions on it... Experience and common sense is more important than tire width in my opinion... Personally i love the looks of 285s. But I'm currently on 265s...

Everyone should use what they like and enjoy their trucks the way they want to for sure. Different setups make it more fun than if everyone rocked the same shit.

They do look a shit load wider on the wheels thankfully.

Unfortunately, my old ass has reached the point that I can't pick these suckers up to put them in the bed of the truck. I have a solution for that though as soon as Todd feels like hooking me up again.

I'm going to try my hand at building my own rear bumper since the design is so simple, but the tire solution is going to require some tube bending which is beyond my means.

I'm going to try to start on that tomorrow. Gonna do the rear first. Get the 4.88 Detroit third member in and then do some sheet metal trimming and that should be good. The fronts are going to take a bit more effort since when I pull the front diff, I'm going to drop the oil pan and slap the new rod bearings in. If I can get some help, I might even try to get the taller motor mounts installed. After that I'll get the 4.88 True Trac front diff in and with any luck, there won't be a lot of clearancing to do for the 36s in the front.

Well turbo was fun but the engine needs a valve job. I decided the engine wasn't worth the cost tearing it down to do it so I'm going to be doing a 1uz swap. Luckily my transmission is the same so itll bolt right up.
