Weight and cost are VERY similar to a loaded 4Wh Camper. It’s about 1100 pounds wet.

I looked very hard at the 4Wh campers and I do like them. First off having the GFC really made my wife and i fall in love with the wedge design for simplicity and strength. It just works incredibly well. Second while the 4Wh campers are stout, they just aren’t in the realm of Khaya stout. This thing looks and feels incredible. It’s basically 100% Aluminium and stainless no wood in the construction anywhere, and it uses the very best components for every system. We just really liked it. The 4Wh camper has a little more room inside but this really suited our needs perfectly.

As mentioned to each his own, lot of great choices out there. This is my choice for my style of travel (live a few weeks at a time in it, than back to the garage until the next trip) if i was gonna rip down dirt roads at high speeds every weekend I wouldn’t have chosen this for sure.

Long story short we REALLY love the wedge style but wanted a fully loaded camper. This was the best and really only choice.

Finally they’ve evolved over the years but they’re basically designed to be rental units in Africa so in my mind they’ve gotta be TOUGH!

FWIW - For even more accurate numbers, maybe have a thermometer outside catching the real temperature vs the iPhone app? Either way still pretty good findings. Thanks for sharing.

That's pretty slick! I got to hang out in the canopy version at NWOR a bit and they have some cool ideas/designs! I really like the cabinet/sink/stove unit in yours!

I don't have the temp readings from last weekend but we had the Drifter in the Eastern Wa sun with the tent deployed and all windows closed last weekend. Went and rode all day and came back and was pleasantly surprised at the temp inside when we got back. the tent material seems to hold heat in during the winter and cool in during the summer. will have to see how interior temps increase in ~90 degree temps we will likely see in august.

 

Yeah I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend with the OK4WD truck (with the new canopy camper on it) it was slick. Basically a blank slate to build whatever you like. OK4WD has a full Goosegear build in theirs. The Khaya is similar, a little bigger and with options allow you to build a full “RV” and have it delivered complete.

The sink/ stove unit is pretty cool, i believe Dometic makes them mostly for the boating market rather than vehicles.. but i could be wrong.

I’ve been very impressed with the build quality of Alu-Cab so far. I’m looking forward to a good multi-night shake down shortly. I’ll keep the thread updated.

Side note: UPS just dropped me off some 1250mm Alu-Cab bars that if my math is correct will allow me to mount the Maxtrax specific tray to my roof in the very near future. We shall see.

 

I think you are correct, it’s all dometic units they are using.

 

Can you take this on and off with jacks like the 4WC?

 

Yes. That was one of the things i really felt was important. Bolt on 4 jacks, loosen the rear turn buckles and remove two bolts mid ship and it’s off in under 10 mins. Anderson plug is the only wiring connecting it.

 

I picked up my Alu-Cab canopy camper in March, It has been working out great. I had been thinking about a wedge camper for a while. We had been using a roof top tent but the set up time was bothersome, so on our last trip to Africa I rented a Alu-Cab camper on a Toyota Land Cruiser Pick up. We spent a month with it. The set up time for the Shadow Awning and sleeping space was amazing. So at Expo East I was going to check out all the wedge camper choices. Alu-Cab introduced the new canopy camper at the show and were throwing in their shadow awning if you ordered at the show. Done deal we barely thought about. A few of the unique features of the Alu-Cab I like are. The rear door makes it so easy to get in and out and has been totally dust tight, the awning over the rear window worked good on hot rainy days in Africa (able to have widow fully open in the rain), and we like the split sleeping platform. Oh and the table is very handy.

Finally got a good shakedown in the books... new camper is sooooooooo nice.

 

Anyone have any experience with the GFC RTT?

Not really wanting to deal with the wait times for either the Drifter or GFC camper, so I think I'm going to set up my 1st Gen like the attached pic. Custom shell and the Prinsu, and then having the shell company build in a rack that can mount the RTT as close to flush with the top of the shell. Losing out on the ability to get into the bed from inside but I can live with that.

 

No experience with the tent, but having owned the camper version the best part is being able to stand up, change, make coffee ext... all the tent gives you is a low profile small tent that’s quick to open and close...

Why not put in a deposit and use a $900 smittybuilt while you wait? Sell it for $700 when your done and use the GFC

Again as a previous owner I don’t know why you’d want the tent version on a truck. Kinda misses the point. But just my $.02
