came out this morning to move my truck released the emergency brake and put in drive truck would not move gave it more gas right rear tire started to spin and burn rubber. Driver side locked and not moving put it in 4 hi truck started to move went about 50 feet ( diver side still lock up) then a little forward then reverse and pop it finally let go. All I did the day before was wash the truck and then park it. Any clues as to what’s going on if it was winter no question frozen brakes but it’s 95 degrees here.

quite a few threads on here about this issue. Got to drive these trucks some after washing otherwise the above can happen.

Still some water in the drum over night should not lock the rear drum up like that.

It shouldn’t but it’s happened some on here. Mine popped once but it didn’t stick like yours and others have. I try to drive mine real quick after a wash if I remember to though.

It's the drum/emergency brake seized up, had it happen to my fiances civic, either put a 2x2 against the drum and hit it with a large hammer to jar them loose or drive it for about 20 feet and itll poop loose.
Solution - Dont put the parking break on after getting the rear brakes really wet.

I guess I can do that. I’m going to take the drums off tomorrow and see what he’ll is going on and if need be will lubricate and clean.

Tacoma definitely needs to get rid of those drum brakes and step into the 21st Century. No more excuses

    Advantages of Drums:
    • Efficiency: Greater torque production at a given line pressure for same diameter drum vs. disc. This is why the disc is almost always larger diameter than the drum it replaces on cars that could have either brake system. The larger disc diameter is needed for adequate torque production.
    • Weight: Drum systems weigh less than comparable disc systems.
    • Parking Brake: Drum brakes make a superior park brake due to the wedging action of the shoe against the drum. Once the park brake is set, any attempt to rotate the wheel causes the drum brake to grip harder (like a wedge type door stop).
    • Drag: Much time is spent designing systems that will pull the pads away from the disc to minimize energy loss due to pad drag on the rotor. In a drum brake system, springs pull the shoes away from the drum so that, at normal operating temperatures, there is little or no brake drag. I think I would argue that drums have a higher loss than disc due to how they’re typically adjusted. But if adjusted correctly, there should be slight drag when cold, but as the drum heats and expands, drag is reduced, or is it negligible?

Not convinced. The disc brake has its own advantages and one of them is easy inspection. The disc brake system also has better stopping power than the drum brake. And THATS why we even have brakes.......to stop. Now.

THIS is why Toyota still uses drums...Drum brakes are cheaper to manufacture than disc brakes, because there are fewer moving parts and because in the rear the parking brake (which often works by an drum-and-shoe mechanism even on four-wheel-disc-equipped cars) can share a drum with the "regular" brakes. It's not about stopping power, It's about Toyota saving money.

Was the parking brake set when you washed it and left engaged overnight? If so it might have caused the shoes to rust to the drum. Best thing to do is drive it for a bit after washing to clear the water from the surfaces or else just leave the parking brake disengaged overnight.

As for the disc vs drum brakes, I've had 5 trucks in 33 years, many times have had to replace either pads and rotors. Not once have I had to do anything other than one or two minor adjustments to the rear drums.

Drum brakes can seize in the winter, I just don't use the parking brake in sub freezing temps.

Yes brake was set when I washed it then I moved the truck around and parked it for the day and set the e brake. I have done this same procedure countless times and never had this happen.

That's probably not going to clear out the water, I'd drive it a few miles and cycle the brakes a couple of times.

Or just leave the parking brake off overnight after washing.
