Refer to KBB for pricing. I just bought a 2015 DCSB with 86,000 miles for $19,900. Everything comes down to cost/value.

although KBB is decent and has been around a long time, most dealerships actually seem to use NADA because it is far more comprehensive based on actual sales values in certain states and counties. Theres actual numbers behind its calculations of value, where as KBB and edmunds etc are just throwing out a rough estimate based on depreciation and general geographical area. I negotiated the fair market price on my tacoma using NADA guides, which was actually in my favor against the higher quotes from KBB and Edmunds. Better safe than sorry, check all three places and produce an average.

My 07 was $8000 with 214k on it. No service history on it, but the frame was new. I took it to a yota dealer and they pulled up the history and it's essentially a 1 owner truck.
    T
1st guy bought it and sold it 3 months later with hardly any miles. The 2nd owner drove it to 214, did the frame recall and traded it in. He also did a new clutch, shocks, leafs, spiral cable, master cylinder, and a bunch of other things all at the yota dealership. Had the place I bought it from saw that, it would have been more.

My 2011 double cab short bed 4x4 has 206k on it now. I bought it 3 years ago with 174k, truck looked new and drove perfect. I paid $16,900 3 years ago. I’m still very happy with my truck.

My buddy paid $24k for a 2011 TRD with 50,000 miles in great shape. Personally I can't see spending that much on a 8 year old truck -- also I'm not in the market for a TRD anyway. So it's got everything exactly as he wanted and he could not be happier. So you will definitely pay a premium for low miles on these trucks, heck you will pay a premium simply because it's a Tacoma and that is for good reason.
If the truck has full documentation and is as clean as you say it is, offer $14k and see what they say... it's lower than they are asking but it's still a reasonable number, not a "low ball" offer. Remember that cash talks and be sure you are willing and ready to walk away, that's how you will get the best deal. Good luck.

I just recently bought mine. 2009 with 111K miles, $15.9 out the door with tax, title, license. It was about a grand and a half under what KBB listed for the same thing but with 120K miles. Inside is immaculate and leather (preference of mine). APR on the financing is higher though because of the age of the truck, so that's something to keep in mind as well.

Thank you all for the responses! I checked the VIN report: only one owner (so I assume this is mostly highway miles which is great!), no title issues and no accidents reported. Squeaky clean in terms of history and excellent condition aside from some surface rust on the front coilovers which may need to be replaced in the future ($500-800?). Double cab and long bed are definitely a must for me however, I'm not keen on Red at all. But if I can get this for $13-14k I think its worth it.

My only concern is that this is going to be my primary (and only) driver so i'm reluctant to trade/sell one truck that has issues for another. But it sounds like 181k miles doesn't concern you guys at all...although some more convincing would be appreciated :)

    Too few to list.
Don't be scared of the mileage. My cousin has a 2009 which he changes the oil between 5K-8K and has only replaced the plugs twice and it has 170K trouble free miles.

Also have a 2010 4Runner with 155K miles and aside from maintenance parts, no other parts have been replaced.

I wouldn't be scared per se, but don't be a fool either. Yes it's a toyota and they are very good quality vehicles, with longevity nearly a guarantee. That said, 180k is a lot of use. Think of the longest road trips you've taken. Mine was 2,800 miles, and took over a week through many states and lots of varying terrain. This truck has been through a absolute crap ton of variant conditions, and varying user input as well. Could have been babied for 100k but beat to hell (driving manner) for 80k.

All in all, to put this in perspective, it is probably a well maintained and cared for truck from the sound of what you've studied so far. Still, it's had a lot of use and life put through it - I wouldn't buy it expecting years of completely trouble free use. It's going to need some basic things as it continues to take mileage. It's in the later life stages where replacement is necessary on peripheral systems like Alternator, pumps, belts, maybe a timing belt/chain, SENSORS (which can get expensive as several tend to go at once on high mileage vehicles), etc.

I don't want to scare you from the truck you're interested in. It could be a good deal. Personally I truly believe there's a better truck out there waiting to kick you in the teeth if you commit to this one hastily. Find something under 150k / $18k and I think you'll be much happier in the long run.

Sorry if my comment isnt what you were looking for, Im just being real with you! Good luck with your upcoming purchase decisions!

Nope this is perfect! I agree 100% and have found a TON of Tacomas with less mileage listed slightly more expensive than this one. The problem is my current ram I need to get rid of, seeing as I just bought it two years ago and still owe on it. Most dealerships I've talked to with Tacomas aren't interested in a trade that needs work done (or can't work on them) and I fear I would have trouble selling privately. So unfortunately I'm kind of stuck working with bigger dealerships that are willing to take a truck that needs work. I am completely fine with regular maintenance/repairs that are expected...just not failed engines and ECM's under 120k miles like my previous two trucks lol.

Buying a truck, any truck with 181k miles is a roll of the dice. Really no way to verify how well the truck was maintained/ treated by the previous owner(s). Even if they can provide service records showing everything was done on time there are still alot of unknowns.

Pass. You can find another truck with much less miles for the same price or lower. Shop around.

i feel you! i had a 2016 corolla i bought new for 3 years until i finally found the OH GOSH THATS THE ONE deal on my truck a few weeks ago...

Im 23, im poor, and i thankfully paid off that brand new corolla in 11 months so it was free miles for the last two years. Not a single repair, not even brakes and i put 46,000 on that thing. The entire time i wanted to get back into a truck, because my 100 mile a day commute was no longer thanks to job switching shortly after getting the corolla (facepalm). I nearly bought a few trucks that seemed like good deals, but kept telling myself and listening to my dad's advice to be patient. Then one day, when i had literally the night before gotten over plans of getting a truck, my boss says his son at the toyota dealership just got an incredible trade in and its not even being advertised yet. He had me go see it while on the clock, and as soon as i took it for a test drive i knew it was the one. 2015, 4cyl, 4x4, magnetic gray, Cruise, entune, yada yada, 4,898 miles. Yes, less than 5k miles. They asked 24k, i offered 23k OUT the door, after all taxes and fees (NYS tax is 8%). My boss's son made it happen and im so very happy i waited for a hella deal like this to come along. Yours will too.

As for selling private sale, you might or might not be successful. It could be on craigslist right now getting some attention and who knows, you may sell it! Then you have cash on hand and youre ready to throw some hunneds in a dealerships face. I understand your perdicament, but you should find a way to work around it because you are the exact person the dealerships want - someone stuck with a vehicle they cant get out from under who will take a lowball trade in offer and pay premium on the vehicle they want. Sell that Ram private sale, or make sure you get book value for it. Use Cars.com, Autotrader, etc to find the exact setup of tacoma you want, and if youre willing to drive or fly a few hundred miles, you can absolutely find a tacoma for under $20K with probably near or under 120k miles. When dropping this much cash on a vehicle, brand name or not, its almost ridiculous to pay 20 grand for a vehicle with a 100k when people do what i just did and find a 2015 with FIVE THOUSAND MILES for 23 grand. Take your time, weight the cost vs wear/mileage, and if you can bump up your price just a few thousand, you will get into some much newer/younger vehicles. I really do hope youre able to take your time and wait for the right one man!
