Had anyone bought and installed one of these ebay turbo kits.
I want to add more power to my first gen tacoma but cant justify throwing down 4 grand for roughly the same amount of horsepower as the turbo kit(if it works)

Gonna need to do a lot of fab on a kit like that.

You get what you pay for.
Spend $$$$ and have it fit and work.
Spend $$$ and have to fight it to get it to fit. End up being a balding alcholic from the stress of building stuff to try to get it to fit. When it doesnt work, go spend $$$$ to get the right one after going bonkers trying to remove all the crap you put on, only to find the bracket you built in place wont come out but is in the way of the real kit fitting.

OP being in California I guess your building a off road only Truck?

One of those things you need to fabricate yourself!!As a manifold whould add a huge price increase

I gotta wonder just where your going to fit the turbo under the hood??

Maybe install the turbo on the right side floor of the cab I pondered that idea at one time.

You'll never pass a CA smog test with that kit. There are no CARB legal turbo kits for our trucks to my knowledge. People that do it find ways around the test ($$$) or they go back to stock every time they have to get tested.

And the amount of fab work and tuning work involved with getting that turbo kit installed and running right will put you at more than the cost of a supercharger, and the superchargers are smog legal. And they're bolt on.

Yeah, I see you're also in San Francisco. You'll fail emissions testing the moment the SMOG referee opens the hood.

Maybe he'll remove it before SMOG, then reinstall it after?

You can do that, but it's rather tedious. I know of people who do that - but most mods that needs to be undertaken with a Turbo are intended to be permanent and thus difficult to remove and install every two years.

A lot of people do that but usually they're not asking about cheap ebay turbo kits, to put it plainly.

I think the OPs best bet is to save up for a supercharger kit and not have to worry about the hassle of removing it every two years for smog

The exhaust manifold is just one part of it. You have to worry about fuel lines, intercooler piping, etc etc etc.

Like I said, people do it. But most people don't want to remove their entire turbo system and revert to stock every two years. Most people bribe the SMOG ref to look the other way.

Not that I've done it but I hear it's getting more expensive and harder to find shops that will do that. The CA gov comes down hard on them if they get caught

    Yup, this.

The reason I supercharged my engine is because the TRD/Magnuson/Alpine superchargers are all CARB certified and will pass emissions testing. You can't do that with a turbo.

Would be easier maybe to keep a stock engine on a stand then doing a motor swap for the inspections.

Yeah the fines for them are very hefty. I have a few friends who have Smog guys that'll put the sniffer on a known car that will pass, and that's the info they send to the CA DMV.

And if you fail once you get flagged and if you pass after that, the shop that passed you gets looked at closely to make sure nothing fishy went on. Easier to just play by the rules even though most of us disagree with a lot of them.
