How many of you upsize your spare when upsizing your tires?

Just curious. Also, biggest size that can still fit under the bed?

 

I just sized up and thought about this too. I went +1 size, and if the rear went flat, I think to be safe I'd probably have to pull a front and put in in the rear and put the smaller spare in the front. Seems like the $100 for a cheap tire is justified.

 

I went up to 255/85R16s and bought a matching TRD OR wheel to match the spare. The tire fit under the truck but rubbed the exhaust heat shield so I relocated the spare mount towards the tailgate about an inch or so. Only touches the driver's shackle mount now.

 

you can fit 33 underneath, having a full size spare is nice but not 100% necessary

I’ve got 265/75/16s on the truck the spare is still the 245/75/16 it came with. As long as the last 2 numbers match I don’t care.
I hear you can get a 285 under there with a little bit of hammer action.

 

You should def have a full size spare. Unless you want to burn up your diffs.

If only 2wd, then you can get away with a smaller tire in front. But if 4x4 and off-road you will bummed.

 

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but you do realize that the "75" is just the aspect ratio, right? Your 265/75/16 and 245/75/16 have a difference of about 1.18" in height. A more extreme example would be something like 315/75/16, which is over 4" taller than 245/75/16!

To answer the OP's original question, put me down as a believer in a full-size spare!

One or two sizes up, I probably wouldn’t worry about it. It is nice having matching spare tire and wheel though, so it can be put into the rotation.

It's one thing to have a skinny or fat tire but entirely different when changing diameters.

 

IMO always upgrade the spare when going larger if you plan on being off road or in conditions that warrant 4wd. It's extremely bad for the truck if you hit patches of grip with different size tires and it's the equivalent of turning on dry ground as far as the differentials are concerned.

 

I did. I’m running 33’s. Would be a bit silly not to match the size of your spare if you ask me.

 

A lot of time you can find a used tire on ebay, usually from a totaled vehicle part out for cheap. Thats what i did. I think i paid 60 bucks shipped for a like new matching Ko2 for my spare when ebay ran a 15% off coupon.

 

I just buy the cheap knock off version in the same size of whatever I’m running.

 

That works too. Spare is just meant to get you by until u can get a fix, not to go 50,000 miles.

 

I am a believer in a full size. I fit a 255/85/16 without issue until my new rear bumper. Bumper needed a little adjusting. I would't care so much about 285 series 33 and a 255 series 33, but I want diameter close and able to get me off the trail I am on without issue or worry. In fact, I am planning a multi day fall trip through more desolate areas and and am debating a 2nd full size for that trip as we will only have 2 vehicles.

 

I go with a fifth matching wheel and tire, and rotate it in.

I like to go to fairly remote areas, and I don't like surprises. If i just stayed around town, I probably wouldn't bother.

285 will fit. Barely but it will. No hammer required.
