    It's complicated.
What they mean is "we're not making nearly as much as we would have, if you had financed it with us, or brought us a trade-in."

They lost money on the potential profit of a trade

They lost money from a finance company kickback

But they made money from the sale of the truck.

They gave me $4k over book on my trade, but even as much as they paid for the Forester, they will still make at least $2k on it.

$30,134 including doc and delivery. Does not include T,T,&L.

Congrats! Nice truck! Post a photo when you get a chance.

I've had my new Tacoma ~2 weeks... Nobody told me that the cost of the truck would turn out to be the least of my expenses! I didn't know there so many mods!!!!

    Adding one more item:

    9. Find the right dealership, and the right sales person. The right combination makes everything so much easier!

Having worked internet sales at a Toyota dealership I can verify they do occasionally take deals where they lose money. Why? Because it helps with the units the dealership has sold. Big volume dealerships have a bigger expectation for units sold and therefore have more room to lose money because it’s not about the profit made on each vehicle but rather how many vehicles they can sell.

With the age of the internet things are more transparent and thanks to threads like this, dealers know that if they aren’t aggressive with pricing they will lose business to competition. So if a dealership has to lose money to make a car deal they will do it since it’s taking a car deal away from the competition. Plus they depend on finance managers to recoup losses through extended maintenance and service programs, so if they lose money on the front they almost always make money on the back end.

I negotiated $2,500 off my 2019 Tacoma Pro. Did the dealership break even on my deal. I’m thinking with the “tissue” from Toyota they made decent money despite the discount.

$2,500 off of MSRP? No. The dealership still made several thousand (and if you financed through them, they made A LOT more!)

Now, beginning around the $4,500+ threshold, they're still making money, but not nearly as much.

    Enjoy the truck!

They're going to make money because you agreed to an insanely bad deal...I got my TRD OR DCSB with all of those add ons (zaktek, tint, blackout package, mats) for $32k + TTL.

    Preach, brother!

I had an A.R.E. on the 1992 Toyota Xtra Cab pickup that I just sold. The top had the vented windoors, Yakima roof rack & crossbars, fold-down sliding front window, and carpeting; I bought it slightly used, for $1k.

I was floored when I saw that ~$3k price tag for the new ones.

Picked up my TRDOR 4x4 long bed for just over $1000 below MSRP Out-The-Door. (So Cal). Tried to target $5000 below MSRP + fees....and I came pretty close. BTW, my truck had none of the crazy dealer add-ons. Tech package-Truck exterior package w/step and bed extender- all weather mats-blacked out emblems.
