If you're changing tire diameters (31", 32", 33", etc.) your replacement cost is for 5 tires, not 4.

I mean... tires are cheap. Transmission/differential/drivetrain work is expensive.

I kept my old steelie spare and just put a bigger tire on it to match the diameter on my new set. A lot of people do that.

I always do. Just moved up to a 315/70/17 and need to figure out how to keep it with the truck.

Please take care of this, so many nuts on the road if you get stranded or walking on the highway. Not sure why so many people get hit but everyday it is on the news. Throw that sucker in your bed and chain it up.

Getting a flat is pretty rare and I have only used my spare twice as all my other flats I could fix, on the spot (tire plug kit and an air pump).

To put your minds at ease, in an emergency, if you have to be in 4WD and use the spare, a slightly smaller spare is not going to ruin your day or the Tacoma. I have 265/75-16 tires and the spare is the stock 265/70-16 (about 1" different diameter). No way would I pay for a spare that I may never need with an iffy concern. I drove 30 miles on that spare (used on the rear axle), nearly 10 miles in 4WD, and would never know it was 1" smaller as NOTHING happened. This was 3 years and 30,000+ miles ago.

I do but the stock one. I have 33s on 18s so... yeah if I get a flat and I swap it with the stock 17 and 255? Unsure. Funny thing to watch I’m sure.

I went from the stock 265/70/R16 to 265/75/R16 Wildpeaks. Replacing the spare wasn't necessary but $125 a tire and my OCD wouldn't allow it lol.

I don't think a matching spare is necessary unless you spend a lot of time in 4WD. The truck will drive in 2WD just fine on a slightly smaller spare. In emergency situations where 4WD is necessary the smaller diameter of the spare isn't going to hurt anything because the rest of the tires are going to be slipping anyway. Sure it might cause problems if you drive down the highway in 4WD but why would you do that?

What I have is full size a 265 is WIDER than a 245. A 75 series tire is 75 no matter what when the wheel is the same size. an 80 or 85 is TALLER

The 245/75/16 IS a full size. The current tire is 265/75/16 only width has changed.

By your figuring a 200/55-17 would be taller than a 190/55-17. And it ain’t so. The middle number dictates how tall the tyre sits from the rim, which is why a 265/70-17 is exactly the same size as the 265/75-16.....

Take a look at some tyre charts.

I guess I'm just not understanding why someone would pay big bucks on a lift and new wheels, and then just stop and pinch pennies on the spare.

Tear up a tire on sharp rocks while four wheeling over rough shit in a remote location then see how glad you are you saved a few bucks on the smaller spare. I’ll stick with my full size thanks.

    To each his own though...

How do you account for the diameter difference? A 245/75/16 is not even close to a 265/75/16 just because the last two numbers match.
