I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that dangerous super volcano . Long Valley caldera has been estimated to be holding 240 cubic miles depth of magma

I hope it was clear that I was kidding in both posts. Lassen dumped 6' of ash on Reno.

Well, that's tragic. I'll count my blessings that the quake was virtually undetectable here, and pray for those who fared worse.

I pulled my security camera footage. Only the outdoor cameras were recording, but I couldn't find any evidence of shaking on any of them. But I was definitely under the truck at the moment it hit (based on USGS waveform data for my area). Yikes.

Tripod jack stands are all well and good but there's no keyways on the frame to keep them in place. Is this something anyone has done something about? I remember VW's had peg holes at each jack point. This has always seemed a sketchy area of home mechanics. The high lift could have slipped or the cinder blocks disintegrated but I bet he felt safe enough at the time, probably been doing it that way for years no problem.

Sheesh, more than 70 aftershocks of 4+ since the 4th of July according to the LA Times. That's gotta get on your nerves.

I read an interesting blog post back in April about the Walker Lane hypothesis, which suggests that the region stretching the entire length of the Eastern Sierra will become the new continental edge in the distant future (and not the San Andreas Fault). Ridgecrest happens to be located right along the Walker Lane. The author of the blog post went on to write a full article for Wired around that same time.

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..
This has been discussed for years with no consensus. Maybe with this new data they will be able to better understand what is happening.

You should be more worried about Long Valley caldera or Yellowstone erupting

Finally got around to reading these links plus watching a YouTube video on the Walker Lane fault

Very informative and making sense of the aftershocks working there way North up the Owen's Valley
