Saturday I used my '16 Taco TRD OffRoad to run my boat into the water at Lake Shasta. Then parked the truck and ran the boat all day. Truck was parked in a steep somewhat rutty area off the side of the road with the trailer on. Came back to get the rig to load the boat. Noticed that in 2WD I wasn't pulling out so put in 4WD. Pulled out and heard a CLANK.

Turns out the emergency brake in the 3rd gen commonly freezes up when it gets wet and then dries. I ripped apart some important rear brake parts to the tune of 800 bucks. Redding Toyota service guy said he's seen 4 or 5 now that have done the same thing (Redding has a ton of lakes/reservoirs so a lot of boating). Planning on complaining to Toyota about this as it is clearly a pervasive issue. Anyone else seen or heard about this problem?

I have a 2017 TRD Off Road. If I totally wash my truck, which includes spraying the underside and getting the brakes wet, park it in the garage and leave it overnight. It has a manual transmission so I park it in gear and not set the parking brake. More times then not the brakes stick and break loose when I start to drive the truck.

It happened to me a few times. I don't leave the parking brake set for long periods of time now.

It must only be certain trucks, I have washed mine many times and it may sit for a few days or a week at a time and its never froze up.

Same. I wash my truck weekly and always use the parking brake. Never happened once. Left it parked 3 days on the beach once, nothing stuck.

Seen a few. They flashrust and stick. If it happens, dont just try to power it loose. Rock it back and forth.
If it is something you plan to do often, dont use the parking brake. Go to Harbor Freight and get a rubber chock block. Get to where you want to park, put the block behind the driver rear tire and let the truck roll back onto it, then put it in park (or 1st if manual).
You can paint the side of the block orange or yellow to remind yourself it is there.

Not ideal, or what should be required. But, it works and will keep you from trashing stuff.

Happened once to me but it was washing it a night before the temps dropped to freezing. Pretty sure mine was just frozen drums. But a few others have complained about their brakes seizing after washing it and letting it sit with the parking brake on. Me personally I never use the emergency brake. Don’t need it as a parking brake as I have an auto trans.

Never happened when washing. It happened when the rear tires became submerged in water (when backing a boat into the lake).

Water in the drums, is water in the drums. Whether it was from submerging the wheel or spraying from the car wash.

Maybe take the drums apart, clean everything and lube with some xg3a?

Redding Toyota is replacing the brake shoes with different ones that they say won't stick. Leads me to ask Toyota corporate if, in fact different materials can solve this issue that perhaps they should reimburse for this repair
