Help me surprise my husband!

Having read similar threads in the past, this is the best advise. Unless he has written down what exactly he wants, it is best to say something along the lines of, "Honey, you have my 100% support to invest $1K (or whatever sum you can afford) into your truck." The next best thing may be to give him a $1K gift certificate to his favorite off-road shop. I know I wouldn't want my wife to buy and/or have things installed on my truck; I wouldn't want to be stuck with something I didn't want or like.

 

I've ran 1.5" bolt on spacers for 2 yrs no issues and my truck get rougher use than your husband will ever put it through. If it takes doing some bolt on spacers to get him the wheels he wants it isn't going to be the end of the world.

 

I'd normally say don't do any mods and leave them to him. But if your husband knows, and agrees with you doing this. Plus you said he wouldn't do it for himself. Sounds like you know him very well and what he would like.
l say think about if he's flashy or subdued. Only you would know that. That would mean the difference between chrome or black rims. It's already lifted do l say a bit bigger rim amd tire to fill out the wheelwell, but not enough for any interference with any other components.
I guess it depends on your budget as to what else you want to do. But a nice set of wheels on a nicely detailed truck always makes a huge difference.

 

I definitely appreciate everyone’s insight. I also totally understand those who are discouraging this, because I’m extremely picky when it comes to my vehicle (I don’t even let him drive mine!), as is everyone else in my family. Even so, they all know what my plans are with his truck, and they all agree that he’s going to be thrilled. He’s a completely different type of guy. I get your concerns, truly, because I’m obscenely picky and would not appreciate this kind of gesture. He undoubtedly will.

 

He’s definitely subdued. He loved the black wheels on his friend’s truck (and the current ones on his are chrome), so I’m definitely thinking black. I never thought of bigger rims, so I’ll definitely look into that. I appreciate your insight!

 

We need an outline. A direction of what you are imagining in your mind.

Do you want more of a true lift?

Do you plan on taking any off road excursions for camping?

Do you want armor, such as bumpers and rock sliders( which can be used as side-steps, and a huge safety factor for side impacts)?

Do you want engine performance (that can be as deep a rabbit hole as the craziest suspensions)?

Upload pictures of some wheels that you may be thinking of.

Answering those questions will greatly help direct the flow of support and with the wealth of knowledge these members have, they can give you all of the detailed nuances.

So I have the EXACT same truck with the exact same 18 wheels. And trust me, I’m going through the same issue in terms of figuring out what will work. The stock wheels he has are currently +25 offset. The issue with new wheels, is that they are wider, so that same +25 is different for those. You would need to find an 18 inch wheel that has a 0 offset, or a negative offset to clear the upper control arms and stuff. The problem is, it’s very hard to find a wheel that fits the Tacoma in that size with the proper hub size, and that offset you need.

I would say drop down to a 17 inch wheel and tire set up for it. It will retain most of the height it's at now and open yourself to more available choices. Most 18's and above come in chrome or black and chrome/machined.

 

He isn’t interested in much more lift. He’s said he wants bigger tires, and that’ll accomplish as much lift as he’s hoping for. (To note — he hasn’t seen it since the leveling kit was installed, either, but he does know it was put on.)

Not planning on any off roading or camping. We pretty much stick to pavement, and we take my car on trips (we have little kids and big dogs, so the Suburban is much more comfortable). His basically just goes to work and back. On the beach once or twice where we live.

I haven’t considered any engine performance modifications, and I don’t know that he would care much for any.

Sounds to me like you have a pretty good idea already of what hubby would like. How about a field trip to Discount Tire to see what they recommend? Photos of the current wheels might help, and whether you want something similar, or, as you said earlier, "make the truck look more youthful" and change things up. I also recommend 17" wheels, l lot more choices in both wheels & tires.

 

First off, this is awesome of you for doing this! Now after reading everything I would say go with a nice set of Wildpeaks in 265s (Any bigger and you MAY rub/complicate things) and Stealth custom rims. They all come in black and though their stock is usually limited, you wont have any problems finding 17" or 18" rims. Throw in a nice detail and it'll look like a completely new badass rig! You'll definitely get the wow factor you're looking for IMO.

Those DX4 7S 18s you like are pretty heavy (32lb vs stock of 28ish for the Limited 18" wheels.) I'd try and go down to a 17 both for reduced weight and tire selection. Right now SCS Ray 10s are in stock in Matte Gray and Matte Gunmetal in the 17x8.5 4.3" BS (24.6 lb). I'm not sure if that's a look/color that will go with his truck...but pair those with a 265/70/17 and you should be good to go with no rubbing.

As far as tires: since the truck isn't going to leave the pavement I'd stay away from LT (or E Load) tires for ride comfort and reduced weight.

 

Buying wheels and tires is a very big investment so you want to make sure it's the style and size he wants. He may not like the style and likely not tell you to avoid hurting your feelings. This is something you should do together. I would suggest maybe look into upgrades such as new stereo, seat covers, or even a prinsu rack. OP, the reason why those wheels listed does not list to fit a tacoma is likely not made to fit the tacoma center hub bore size. Go with a either a 16" or 17" wheel size and it open up much more options for you.

 

Thank you! I hadn't considered the weight, but that definitely makes sense. I'll look into the SCS. His truck is silver, so the gray might look okay! I'll post a "before" photo as soon as I locate one in my phone. The truck is at my parents' house so it can be driven a little while he's gone.

 

I too have an awesome wife like you.

It does get crazy choices overwhelming. One thought might be surprise him with the choice himself after he’s back. I know I enjoy the process and anticipation aspect of outfitting my truck as much as reveling in the aftermath of the upgrades.
