Good news and bad news...

Good news, my Taco got new shoes. Bad news, the Tire Rack recommended installer scratched every new wheel during the install. My kid got there at 215p for a 230p appointment, they told him they were behind and to come back at 3p. They started my truck around 330p and finished unmounting my stock tires, removing the tire pressure sensors, installing the sensors on my new wheels, mounting my tires, balancing the wheels, and installing everything in 35 minutes. He said the dude was trying to break a speed record or something. My son started home when he decided to strap down the old wheels in the bed so they wouldn't move around, that's when he noticed the damage. He went back and showed the people working there and they immediately denied that they could of done that because their machine has "that plastic part". They then mentioned that he had been gone for 15 minutes. My son told them drove a short distance, then came right back. Then they said well maybe they were damaged in shipment by UPS. Then I called them from my overseas location, and they told me the same thing. "Well, your son went down to Aldi and was gone 15 minutes" to which I asked if he was saying that my son damaged four wheels in exactly the same way in 15 minutes in a grocery store parking lot. He then almost shouted No! and got all defensive. Then he told me the same thing about UPS but after I questioned him he admitted that the boxes were not damaged and the wheels were individually wrapped inside the boxes. Funny thing is my kid got a picture of one of the wheels before they installed them...in a perfect cardboard box. The customer service rep at Tire Rack also brought up a good point that if they were damaged in transit, then why did they install them on my truck? Tire Rack asked for the pictures and is forwarding this to their installer department. The installer told me on the phone that they would conduct an "insurance investigation" whatever that means. They didn't even take pictures of the damage so who knows what they're doing. I'm just super annoyed and feel like they tried to pull a fast one on my son because he's an 18 year old kid. I told Tire Rack it's between them and the installer who's paying for these wheels, but I expect a new set delivered to the house, and then my son is going to visit as many places as he has to in town (starting with my Toyota dealer) to find someone who can guarantee they can install these wheels without scratching them. I only used this installer because they were Tire Rack recommended. Guess their vetting process isn't that great.

 

Sloppy work. That sucks.

 

That sucks. Wheel it a few times and the scratches will blend in.

 

What do you want from us

 

Always take pics before, after and be sure to inspect them before leaving. Also I am gonna guess they just gunned down the lug nuts past torque specs. Two uggs duggas does not equal proper torque.

 

The very pathetic standard most workers hold themselves to nowadays. I masked off where the lug nuts go and the lip of the rim when getting new tires on my SCS rims that I just powder coated. Im very meticulous about how my stuff is handled and don't want some asshat damaging my stuff

 

Just venting I guess. I was excited to post up picks of my new wheels and what not, instead I got to deal with this. Like JaCado said, hopefully someone reads this and thinks about taking before and after pictures, and hopefully they won't do what I did and make the faulty assumption that a Tire Rack recommended installer will always be the best bet.

I’ve always taken pics before any service to my wheels. I use spline lugs and they have to use my key, which I wrapped in electrical tape to prevent it from scratching my wheels.

 

Similar thing happened to my SCS Ray 10's when I had them installed at Discount Tire. I ended up settling with them for a full refund on the labor and lug nuts they sold me...and a check for $500. They were great about it...I had the check from their main office in 2 days.

I could have probably bitched for new rims, but I figured they were only gonna get more scratches anyway.

Wait wut? Are those the factory ones that they used? I know Tire Rack sent them new lug nuts and an adapter to use with these wheels. Are they unsafe like this? Should I send my son back to get the right ones put on? Can't believe this has turned into such a sh*t show...

Yes! Those are the wrong ones. Toyota has one of the shortest studs and you need this type of lug nuts for those type of wheels.

 

Thanks for the info. My order from Tire Rack said they came with wheel specific nickel-plated lug nuts. My son tells me he has a bag of old lug nuts they gave him, and to him it looks like they are the old ones because they look pretty beat up from road salt and what not. So I asked the Tire Rack customer service rep to verify that these are in fact the lug nuts I was supposed to get. I saw some similar to these on Method's website, the want $66 for a set. And every image I can find of a Taco running Method wheels shows them using lugs similar to the one in your picture. So I'm not sure if Tire Rack screwed up, or if these are suitable subs. I might go ahead and order the set from Method just to be sure, and because they look a ton better.

That sucks to hear. Hopefully it’ll get resolved. That’s why I stay away from tire rack, discount tires, 4wp etc. I stick with family ran business. I feel like they take more pride on what they do.

New wheels look so good! Hopefully Tire Rack will make this right and replaced the wheels they damaged during the install. They look great from a distance though! Can't wait to get home in a few months and see them for myself.

Sorry to hear, my new wheels are still sitting in the garage, I know for a fact they will scratch them, they always do!

PS, sorry to say this, but those are possibly the most hideous center caps I’ve ever seen, lol. I like the wheels!

 

Wow!! That sucks, I am dreading getting my Ray 10'S mounted for this very reason. Hope they make this right for you.
