What about my other Q about making new squares for addtl ducting?

 

As long as you aren't removing any webbing , it should be no problem

 

that's the thing, they already have the square cutouts between some of the webbing, but I have a feeling they would have to modify some of the other webbing in order to add more square HVAC cutouts, unless they just stuff some flexible ducting in there instead.

 

@ThunderOne My experience is that if you modify the webbing of the floor trusses; you will most likely have to have a registered/ licensed engineer okay the changes as the design of the floor trusses has changed.

Oh boy. That'll be fun. Guess I better start getting used the idea of one giant air return on the top floor.

 

I went by there yesterday and noticed that some of the floor trusses have been modified. I am not sure why, but it looks to me like they are in fact making changes to the trusses. Sorry I didn't get any pics, it was dark out when I went by there.

 

Pics would help, but maybe next time bring a camera with flash?

 

I'll go by there this afternoon and get some pics! Since I took one of the same area last week, I'll post them in order to show the differences.

 

got off the phone with the builder, he really doesn't want to put any more returns in, not sure if not feasible or if ducting is too big or what, he said he would just put additional sensor at the 2nd level to help equalize temps but obviously that has nothing to do with air circulation. So I guess I will just have to deal with one HUGE return on the top floor next to the thermostat.
They will work with me on the other changes though.. just not the HVAC. Sad.

 

Yea, the big problem of having just one central air return instead of one in each room, is restricted air circulation when the door is closed.

 

Is it really a significant difference? I would think there would be a lot of variables at play here even with multiple returns (length of the different return sections, location of returns, etc).

I'm sure more is better but is it significantly better?

 

I don't know, but they tend to undercut the doors in order to promote air circulation. Which is still not a substitute for just opening the doors. Air returns would help without having to open up every door.

 

How the heck do they manage to do this? Looks like a 2x4 or OSB was dropped onto these spots pretty hard

Still kind of waiting to see these truss modifications, and why they were done.

Does seem like they are hacking their way in building this home.

Corner of a sheet of plywood falling from 8' would do that to OSB subfloor no problem

 

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say thats not something designed or approved by the truss engineer
