How much have you "lost" on vehicles?

I'm almost 30, and I have had 9 different vehicles since I have been old enough to drive. Of course, i spent money modding up every single one, and usually ended up selling them for less than the current values. I did some simple math, and I think I have "lost" about 30 grand in the last 13 years or so. It really made me feel like an idiot. Obviously, I know that you always lose when you sell a car, especially if you customize it, but it seems like I lost more than most people. What's the most you guys have lost?

Cheaper than a wife. Look at all the fun you had. That's 2.3 grand a year. Some people spend more then that on beer.

Oh man.... I don't feel so bad now. I bought a car a few years ago and was so upset with myself for buying it that I traded it in about 10 days later. That was a big hit! That with a combination of other vehicles have put me close to your number.

    You only live once right?

I am pretty sure I am set for a while with the vehicles I have now though. If Toyota ever remakes the Supra, my bank account is screwed!

yeah it kind of sucks to take a hit on anything you customize but its cheaper than alot of other habits you could have. something that may help is to sell or trade some of the modded parts from your truck.....what ya got?:D

Im on my third Truck this year. Had a Dakota that was all modded, then a ram which was a headache.....then, I bought the Tacoma just for quality. I got lucky, I usually buy used low ball offers with cash, then drive them a while and dump them.

I traded my Ram (hated that truck) that had issues, for 500.00 more than what I paid for it on the taco. Im done now, unless someone gives me what I paid for the taco. Im always looking for screamimg deals on vehicles. My wife wants me to get couseling for being a truckaholic. :D

I don't really mod my vehicles much and I tend to drive them in to the ground. My last truck I bought new and drove it for 9 years. The only mod was a camper shell. I think you will generally "lose" money on a vehicle if you drive them for less than 5 or 7 years.

I'm 25, and one my second vehicle. First one, I put ~90K miles on it (had 190K when I sold it), this trucl as 91,500 miles on it, and I've put almost 40K of those on. As much fun as new vehicles are, they're a terrible investment.

Don't look at a vehicle as an investment. Investments are to "make" money, vehicles are not. :D

I just got out of classic VW's as toys, and over the past 6 years I put well over $15,000 into 5 separate vehicles (three buses and two bugs) and got less than $5,000 when selling them. As long as your Tacoma remains streetable and can be used as a daily driver, money that you put into it (mods or otherwise) should just be considered "upkeep".

I usually buy trucks used and drive them until I start questioning their reliability or they leave me stranded. I've had 5 trucks over the last 30 years, but the Tacoma is the first one I've ever bought new. Before that I had an F150 I bought when it was 6 years old, and then drove it for 11 years. I hope to drive the Tacoma for at least 15 to 20 years. I feel like I've gotten my money's worth out of each of them. Hopefully that will be the case with the Tacoma as well.

I've gained about 2k in the 3 vehicles I've owned.

I have a bad habit of buying a vehicle, modding it to perform better, and then selling it. Last car I had maybe 3500 in performance parts. This truck, so far, I have maybe 3,000. I am probably just going to keep driving and upgrading it. If something wears out, I replace it with something better. When this little 2.7 is done( 50k miles already!), I am dropping in a 4bt diesel and dana 60 front, 14 bolt rear.

I keep my vehicles as close to stock as possible for that same reason.

I lost about $18k on a highly modified vehicle about two years ago. I'll never go that balls out on mods again.

The hell a vehicle isn't an investment. I wish I had money to have my car be a toy, but the fact is that I have to make a return on my investment in my vehicle, or I'm going to hurt financially. In my opinion, as an "investment" is the perfect way to look at a primary, daily driver vehicle.

Damn, most of the money I lost was on a Jeep Grand cherokee, paid 12, put 5 in it, and sold it it for 4.
