    Hey everyone
Today I tried playing in the mud in 4hi with the traction button pushed. The truck still bogged down and would cut power out. Is there a certain setting or combination of buttons pushed that I need to be able to spin the wheels without cutting power? Also, after some playing, something smelled hot, almost like burning, but went away shortly after, any ideas?
Thanks for the info, I haven't seen anything on here in regards to this.

Anchovy, what will that do? I haven't tried it yet, does it totally defeat traction control then?

I think you press and hold it for 3 to 5 seconds. Traction light on dash comes on and goes off. I don't understand that madness either, or why it's done. I am older, throwing a lever wasn't that hard. 4 lo cuts out all of that silly nonsense .

    Yeah.
That smell was your brakes. The traction system (as well as A-TRAC) uses your brakes to send power to the opposite wheel, and also cuts power to avoid the spinning that you are trying to do. If neither side is getting traction, it's likely going to alternate braking side to side. Probably be good to go through the manual and learn about all the different modes, there are many of them.

I love the new look but I miss the more reliable manual hubs and transfer shift.

Looks like those days are gone. I miss a throw lever too. It was simple, and it worked, and it worked without toasting brakes ! of course back then things cost less. So no we get to press a button just like a cell phone and reduce rpm to nothing and remain stuck until we know to press and hold that button. I want my dumb levers back ! :) and a truck new for 4 grande!

Turn off traction control. With it on the brakes will be applied to any wheel spinning. That is perfect for getting out of situations where you may have one wheel on ice and the the others on dry pavement. But for off road driving it is like trying to drive while dragging an anchor behind you.

Using 4 lo CAN be effective if you're able to slowly get through a rough patch using finesse. But in bad mud you just have to muscle your way through. That means 4hi, no traction control and just let all 4 wheels spin fast to sling mud out of the treads.
