Talk me out of getting a Canyon

People keep saying Toyota's reliability has gone to crap and they hate the powertrain, but have there been a large amounts of people where there '16 or '17 Taco's engine or transmission just exploded and went to crap?

 

Have there been any trucks that have been doing that? I think that might be a problem if so. Lol

 

God, GM and Ford midsizes are SO fugly. I don't care how they drive. I couldn't live with myself if I had to look at that thing every time I walked into my garage.

 

The gear hunting in my '19 is most definitely NOT fixed

 

Define "gear hunting". Do you count downshifting on inclines and downshifts when you mash the pedal when you're under 1.5k rpm?

 

Any incline greater than 1 degrees will cause the transmission to downshift. When starting out on flat surface it will go from 2nd gear to 5th, completely bog, with no power.

My 2nd gen. 4 cylinder transmission worked insanely better than my 3rd gen 6 cylinder. On the same 50 mile interstate trip @ 80 mph, the 4 cyl. would downshift/upshift maybe 2 times. The 6 cyl. will downshift/upshift well over 100 times...not joking.

This is a WIDELY known issue, so I'm won't get in to any more detail...but the issue is very much still present...nothing has been "fixed".

Any gear hunting on the part of mine is my own fault, cause I drive a manual... ;-)

I had an Avalanche a few years ago and had a good experience, so I have nothing against GM trucks, their reputation notwithstanding.

I actually think the Colorado/Canyon (never see any Canyons around here--it is Nebraska LOL) is pretty good looking in certain colors, especially the ZR2. It is apparently a smoother riding auto, so there's that. I think the tech on the Tacoma and styling inside and out is much better though.

It's hard to tell without a lot of effort, but it seems like getting a GM or Ford truck comparable to the Tacoma OR would be quite a bit more expensive, once they're optioned out.

Apparently the Colorado gas engine doesn't have a lot of low-end torque, so I'm not sure it's any better at towing compared to the Tacoma, which is one of my main uses for the truck. (Yes there is a diesel option but no 10.5 0-60 is not acceptable.)

I didn't look at GM or Ford trucks because of the lack of a manual. I'm not sure I've seen anything to change my mind and make me rethink my position.

Just curious...what is your build date? Maybe they made an update between your build and mine (I don't know my build date off hand, but it's a '19). Pretty sure that's not the case, or it would have been HUGE news for a lot of people.

 

My 19 is the same as yours. All of the gear hunting in my taco reminds me of the 1990 S10 4X4 I had with the V6 and 700R4 transmission. Engine was always buzzing from the transmission never knowing what gear to be in. How sad Toyota cant fix it.

 

I think the same every time I see a fake scoop on a Toyota though. Get the off-road...

 

Don't need to tell me twice, the off-road is a better package all together. No scoop, better suspension, better tire-wheel combo, and I may be weird but I really don't like the way that color matched fender flares on the 3rd gens look.

 

I can check after work. All I know off-hand is that it was built in Texas which shouldn't change anything. Either they're built by Mexicans in Mexico or they're built by Mexicans in Texas.

agree....build location wouldn't change anything with engine/tranny. Just wondering if there was some change to the firmware of the engine or tranny between my build and yours. Like I said though...if there was, I'm real sure it would have been brought by someone on here already, cause the "gear hunting" issue is by far the biggest complaint of all 3rd gen owners.

I agree on the Chevy being a good looking rig. That's the one thing Chevy usually does fairly well at IMO.

The Ranger is pretty comparably priced with the options I was looking at. Both the Taco and Ranger I was looking into were right around 40k, give or take. The Ranger would have given up the premium sound system, push button start, and a power rear window, while the Taco gave up underbody protection, power seats, and remote start. Otherwise they were both pretty close in terms of what I was looking for.

Also, you should join us in the Nebraska thread so you can be cool, too.

Don't forget the better traction control system. That was the big selling point for me over the SR5.

 

That's all about the truck trying to stay in Atkinson mode at as low an RPM as possible for the sake of fuel economy. If you hate it, just slap it into "S" mode and pick whatever gear you want. Also, ECT Power mode might help as well. I think that keeps it out of Atkinson mode, but I'm just guessing.

 

I was gonna say that's news to me, but then I remembered my '03 Acura CR in which the transmission crapped out at 180K miles. That could have been cause my son ignored warning lights and drove it into the ground tho.

Other than that, I have had a couple of Hondas without any major problems whatsoever--fiancee's kids have a Pilot with >300K miles on it, still running.

Now my old Chrysler minivans...that's a different story.
