That will do it to, I love cooking with my cast iron. It’s about all I use.

I love cooking with mine. Reminds me of when I was a Boy Scout cooking stuff at a camp. I guess I got turned off by it when my dad was running only cast iron, but seasoning with animal fats and some of his dishes oils were rancid screwing up the meal. I'm just now getting back into it.

You can taste it in the food. The food itself isn't bad, but you get that sour fat taste; no bueno. He doesn't use his cast iron enough. He quit using his cast iron, last I checked, so flavor has returned. It's a shame because he's pretty lucky at getting elk in Colorado and keeps his fridge full of bison meat.

Can you just season it again and burn that taste off?

I had read all the crap about seasoning them with flax seed oil. When we got the Blackstone griddle I grabbed a big bottle of flax seed oil. Burned it in with about 5-6 coats. Then cooked a breakfast of bacon to start, sausage links then scrambled eggs with cheese. Idk if you’ve ever had flax seed oil but it’s a really nutty smoked flavor. Fucking horrible with eggs. I took about 3 bites of egg and couldn’t stand it anymore. Used vegetable oil from the next cook on. Omg never again.

I use Mrs. Tucker’s lard a lot. I have a pile of old cast iron in the shop that needs restored.

Same, flax seed adds the wrong taste, vegetable or canola oil is perfect. Flavor is excellent no matter what you cook in it. The oil adds an "oil" flavor, but nonspecific.

Yeah, you just cook the old stuff off, re-season with vegetable oil and it'll be good within 1 or 2 heat/oil sessions.

The other pan I have was rusted and used at an antique store in Colorado; I was able to get it fixed in a single camp fire with some heavy scrubbing, flame and copious amounts of vegetable oil. Just enough to get the pan too hot to touch, and oiled the crap out of it. It's been perfect since.

Since this is a shop build I might as well drop this here too for any interested parties.
