AC Blower Noise

I know there's a couple TSB's out for noisy HVAC components, but I'm not sure mine falls into the same bucket. On any fan setting, I get a high pitched rapid clicking sound, that will increase as I increase the fan speed. It is annoying as hell, and now that I've noticed it I can hear it even with the radio cranked up...my girlfriend doesn't hear it all. It sounds as if the blades of the fan are striking something since I can hear it spin up and spin down as I adjust the fan. I've only tested on full cold with recirc (I live in Texas, so testing it at any other temperature is out of the question. I WILL autoignite and die), but it seems alot of guys are reporting the problem when cycling to heat and/or defrost. Truck is a 2010.

It's under warranty I know, but I really dont want the techs ripping apart my dash chasing the problem. Anyone else have this issue?

 

x2. Sounds like a leaf got past the filter (or they forgot to install your filter) and is catching on the fan blades.

 

thanks, I'll check it out this afternoon. It does sound like something catching on the fan, but I can't imagine how something would have gotten in there. I park in the garage at home and in an open lot at work during the day.

 

Filter was clean and there was no debris. That's definitely where the sound is coming from though and if i turn the fan by hand I can find the spot where it squeaks. At the risk of stinking up my truck, I'll probably just drop the blower this weekend and lube it up.

 

I'm having the same issue with my 2010 Tacoma. I only notice the high pitched clicking noise when the AC is on. I havent tested to see if I hear it with different settings or with the heater or defrost on. It has a sound when you hear a CD skip through tracks. I havent been able to track down exactly where the sound is coming from. I have checked the filter and it was clean. I was going to continue to troubleshoot it this weekend.

That noise is really starting to get annoying though it seems quiet when the radio volumn is off... i can still hear the high pitched sound when the radio is turned up.

 

+1 here, my 09 does the same, loud enough to hear it over the radio. Filter is clean and there is no debris in the fan. Tried the balancing screws mentioned somewhere else in the forum, but mine seem to be thread locked and wont budge.

 

interesting...yea, I would describe the sound not so much as a CD skipping but that teek teek teek teek teek teek you sometimes get when you burn an audio CD too fast. Pull out your glovebox, remove the filter, and reach in and turn the fan with your fingers (make sure it's off!). You should be able to hear where it's making contact.

it is annoying as hell though, my 06 never did that. I need to find some time to take my truck in so they can register my new TPMS sensors and I'm going to start leaning on them about the TSB..If I can't solve the problem with some lube, I'll have them address this as well since it's obviously an issue with the blower assembly and wont require ripping out the dash.

 

Mine did that for a while then it started sqeeking really bad so I just replaced it..............simple fix......

 

I had mine replaced around 25K miles. One of the bearings in the fan was freezing up.

 

Similar question to this thread, the fan in my '07 only ticks on low and medium but it is absurdly annoying. Once I turn it to high it goes away. Thoughts?

 

Rjclemen, mine is pretty much acting just like yours is. Ticks on lower speeds, but prettyt much gone on high......unless the air noise is over the ticking, making it less apparent.

 

DITTO!!! SO ANNOYING! WHERE IS THE THREAD ON THIS?!

 

i just took mine out and greased the the top bearing and bottom bearing on the motor and left it running for about 2 minutes and its not making a sound now.. if you dont want to try this im pretty sure its under warranty

 

From all of my research on this problem, it seems to be confined to the fan motor assembly itself.... This is a very common problem, I am going to get it fixed tommrow.

 

Mines doing it too, any tips on lubing it?

 

Comments #12-17, have any of you taken the truck into Toyota for service on the issue? My 2010 PreRunner's recently started doing the same thing. Ticking on low and low-med, but not really on the higher speeds. That ticking will eventually drive me insane. Any help is appreciated.
