transmission problem?

    hey taco lovers.

    so today i found a problem with the taco...
    its an automatic, '98, v6 4x4
    and i dont know for sure its the tranny..
    going up hill (highway driving) and it doesnt wanna gear down... just lugs lugs lugs until i step on it... and its not even smooth once i get in a lower gear.
    so i drive it with the 'o/d off' light on...and almost seems to be fine... slight hesitation but nothing companred to when the 'o/d off' light is off.

    any ideas? fluid looks alright.. would a change make a difference?

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    Drop the pan and change the filter. Sounds like pressure isnt building letting the tranny shift propperly, and the most likely cause would be dirty filter. :)

    also want to add thats its really not a good idea to tow without the "overdrive" being turned off.

    yeah, changing the fluid and filter should take care of the problem.:)

    if there wasnt enough pressure there to create smooth shifting, shouldn't there be a leak?
    fluid looks great and is full...

    not necessarily. the filter could be clogged causing not enough fluid to get thru.....even though it may look good and all.

    would that not have the same effect on the truck driving with 'o/d off' button on ?
    seems to drive 99% with it on...
    just trying to hear any possible problem before i give it to 'captain b.s.' (mechanic)

    On your truck, when the tranny is on OD, the converter locks up, therefore not showing the symptoms you describe as often. With it "OFF", the converter remains unlocked, so you will be able to feel more of the issue.

    ok. one more thing... I start the truck up today, put it in gear(without moving and brake on completely) and it starts mis-firing very slightly but noticable, like a dirty fuel filter or a bad fuel injector... still tranny?
