I was just going to recommend making it to one of our brewery meetups and maybe a little education on the basics.

A little trip report. Definitely not my normal wheeling and searching for rocks, but fun none-the-less. I've been planning on doing an 8 day backpacking trip with my cousin and my pops, and figured if Im driving north, why not take 3 or four days camping up the 395. So I started mapping out where to go and how much time it would take etc. I kinda planned this out pretty last minute but it worked perfectly for me. I ran this solo, and it was pretty nice just having my own schedule to worry about and do whatever I wanted to. The wife had to stay back home for the gato and for some work stuff she had to get done. So I packed up the truck and headed out. I figured I'd cut the drive time down if I headed out at night on a Friday and got up to San Bernardino mtns so i could head straight up to Bishop for my second night of camping. I found a yellow post site online and mapped it out and off I went. I figured it was the only place I might run into issues with people partying or doing stupid shit, and I was right. At 11pm some geniuses showed up and to make sure they didnt fuck with my shit I got out of my tent and introduced myself. Needless to say Im pretty sure they were tweaking pretty hard, and it was the first time Ive ever seen someone eat a Tbone steak with a set of needle nose pliers. Ive decided if Im doing this again Im going to buy a gun lol. Other then them fucking up my night of sleep after I kindly asked them to keep it down when I crashed after a few beers, the site would be awesome with a couple trucks. Its right on the PCT trail, and has epic views.

I was amazed to see them sleeping when I left, and I skipped breakfast and grabbed a clif bar from my stash for the backpacking trip and headed to a starbucks because I needed coffee bad. I packed up and was on the road leaving the crazies behind thank god!

Heading up the 395 was a trip. You go from desert to straight up high sierra mtn ranges. Pretty epic

Needless to say it was hard to just keep my eyes on the road, and I immediately realized I would be spending more time heading up this way. Unfortunately I skipped out on the bbq in Big Pine, as it was still early, and I wasnt really hungry. Plus I was trying to get to bishop to the ranger station to see if I could score permits for the backpacking trip. There was a huge line and the temp was 101°, so I headed to high ground. The trail I headed up was pretty awesome as well and the high mountain valleys and pasture was gorgeous. I couldn't believe we have access to these roads, and quickly realized I could spend 3 days driving around this area. There are multiple places to camp, and lots of lakes. I had my eyes set on one spot but wanted to check out the others I read about just in case I was missing out lol.

So I aired down and up I went.

It seemed like I was already on a backpacking trip because every time I thought I was as high up as the trail would allow, it was just another false summit, and much to my enjoyment the trail just kept going up in elevation.

    1E03442A-2AEF-4BAF-B2CC-4742D96588A6.jpg

I finally got up to the upper meadows and they seemed to go forever. Regardless of where I camped I was definitely going to drive into the meadow trail and check it out.

I reached the Lake I was considering and as cool as it was, the sites were pretty exposed to wind, and the shade wasnt all that good. I had escaped the 101° weather of Bishop, but the sun at 10,000 ft will ruin your day if your not careful.

    8DACED29-AE59-42C6-95A6-248EF96AFCC7.jpg

So I continued to the trail i wanted to hit, and the "better" camp sites I read about. I was pretty awestruck with the whole place. Definitely a favorite, and a spot I will try and make an annual trip to. So I headed back down from the lake to make a right and head deeper into the valley to what would be my site. I got lucky cause I passed a number of what looked like choice sites, to see eventually that the book didnt lie. I had pretty much the pick of the litter as there was only one other person there.

    9D3EDDD5-7BAF-460A-92AE-D5441C53F906.jpg

Unfortunately the site right on the meadow was supper buggy. Signaling to me my back packing trip was as I thought it was going to be. Full of mosquitos. The snow fall was heavy this year and the snow melt late. Flowers always mean bugs.

    AF36593E-24EC-40F3-B47F-0AFFBD8C0ECD.jpg 2F2C542F-0757-4805-B078-7936FE855744.jpg

Pretty epic site though, so I settled for the one highest up above the meadow, and it wasnt too shabby and had a great view of the mountain range I would be looking at from the opposite side in a week.

    C2E25DE4-A4DC-481E-8F5B-B4A25EB5C15F.jpg

I set my chair up with this view and started reading a book. Not too bad. I was glad I got there when I did because the remaining three sites were taken shortly after I sat down. Since I was solo I didn't mind the company, and everyone was pretty quiet and respectful.

    9B753133-004D-41EE-A674-D52F629DDB56.jpg

Eventually I was distracted by these guys who seemed to have a territorial dispute lol and it actually consumed most of my time because it was hysterical.

    51E8FDEA-1C29-4418-90AF-34A42A977633.jpg

After making a kobe beef cheeseburger that was delicious i walked to get a better view of the valley and also stumbled upon some tracks that made me think grilling up a burger may not have been a choice thing with yogi around. So I knew the cooler/food and trash would have to be put on lock down well far away from the truck.

Waking up to this view was pretty nice, and I definitely slept like a baby. Especially after going on 4 hours of sleep thanks to my previous nights camp mates.

Today wasnt going to be a busy day, and I had some camping items I wanted to pick up for the hike in Bishop, so I took my time with breakfast and slowly rolled out of camp.

Heading down I had to get some better pics of the meadows, and since I was on my own time and not in a rush I took a lot of glam shots lol

After heading out of bishop and deciding the line for the famous bakery looked not too legit. I went to go to the next site. It is a pretty popular spot as noted by the garbage I picked up all over the place. Pretty lame I was on trash duty. If you go here, pick up after yourself, and help pick up after the other morons. The trail to Laurel lakes was awesome, and definitely a bit more sketch with the talus slopes your driving on at high altitude. There is one tight turn going down into the lakes, but its not that bad if you take your time. I did it solo, so Im sure you can take that from it. That said it is a good spot to have your vehicle tumble down a slope and become a permanent resident. And from what I read theres been a lot of people who have rolled. The trail is steep, and if you go off trail it will be your last bad day. A sponsored up t4r I passed on my way up decided the trail was too much for them. Guess stickers don't help with confidence.

Lower Laurel Lake and a great view of the valley below, also an idea of how steep the edge is lol

As with most of these places there was a mining operation here. I didnt realize you could walk to the mine site until later, and would have the afternoon I got up here if I knew. Also a place I will return, also so I can hike up to the upper lake. Found some cool stuff as I walked around the place, and I had the whole lake to myself.

Later in the day another first gen made it up, and I was glad I wouldnt be totally alone. Then after dinner I was asked by some random guy when I was leaving. He cruised up in a brand new chevy with low profile tires and had blown a side wall on the way up. Now he had no spare and he decided to change his tire on the steep slope of the trail . I told him I was here all night and that they should just stay since it was already dark. I also mentioned to him he should always try find flat ground before changing a tire. Especially on a trail like this. I told him he needed better tires if he wanted to continue to do things like this and that there were some campsites on the lower part of the lake. I didn't need campmates thats for sure.

The stars were epic that night and I got to try out all my new hiking clothes and make sure I would be warm at altitude. The mosquitos were gnarly, and I found a large granite slab with a perfect incline to lie on for star gazing. It was exposed to the wind and kept the bugs from swarming. Needless to say my plan to hike the mine was cut short as I wanted out of the bugs. I made breakfast and took a few last shots before heading down and out to Mono Lake.
