The little bastard went on to attack three more people, over a four hour period. The raccoon was not captured, but based upon his behavior, the Washington DC Health Department and Georgetown University Hospital deemed the animal to considered rabid. All four victims, myself included, went through rabies treatment.

 

The treatment cost about $20,000. Glad I have good insurance.

 

FAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

It’s typically about 1/2 that cost. What contributed to the especially high expense is the treatment was started in a DC hospital and concluded in a Connecticut hospital.

 

Neither of which are "cheap" states to live in as it is, so... makes sense. But still,

 

Unless immediate treatment is received, there is no cure for rabies. It attacks the brain. Without fail; first you go crazy, and then you die.

Well luckily the raccoons we encountered were pretty mellow fellows.

 

Does treatment still involve big needled shots into the belly? (shiver)

No. The treatment wasn’t too bad, especially on balance with the no treatment outcome. The initial injections at the bite site were painful. The follow up injections were more like getting a flu shot.
