I wonder if you cut them to fit each panel piece, if they will fit under the plaid fitted sheets? That way you can move each panel.

Also are you saying put the blue softer foam up in the panel?

It might fit under the fitted sheets... but I couldn’t bring myself to cut it up anymore than I needed to lol. If others find that it works I’ll do it, but for now this is fine for me.

Yea the small squares had the blue foam up, but my larger panels I had the blue foam down.

I have a 6 circuit blue sea fuse box in the bed to handle all the rear lights and power needs.

 

And it fits ok? My sheets are pretty tight to start with.

 

Does anyone else with the 3" mattress find it bothers their back? Wifey's back doesn't seem to agree with it and she's not very sensitive to that sort of thing.

 

Yeah it fits no problem... assuming we are talking about the fitted sheets, and not the grey covers. Jamming them into the grey covers would probably pre-compress them too much and defeat the purpose.

 

My back is sensitive to a crappy mattress, but at one point I slept 8 weeks straight on the 3" mattress and it didn't bother me a bit.

 

We've spent 9 nights in the last two weeks and my girlfriend and I both thought it was the best car camping sleep we have ever had. That isn't saying it wasn't great to sleep in a real bed when we got home, but I didn't have any problem with the 3" mattress.

 

Another thing to keep in mind when thinking about the 2" vs 3" mattress', is that once the foam is covered by the "grey" fabric, that fabric will make the foam much more firm because it will not flex much. There are some advantages to this though and I would assume GFC has figured this part out. My example: we bought a 4" piece of foam for our previous campervan mattress and when we slept on it with a fitted sheet (only), it was nice, but too soft and spongey. I made a PVC-backed Cordura cover for the mattress (kinda like the grey GFC covers, but too thick) and immediately it was noticeably too firm. I made a second cover for the foam out of a poly/cotton material and I loved it, but it was too firm for my wife. That's when I added a 1" latex topper on top of the foam/canvas cover, then wrapped it all in a fitted sheet. All good. AGAIN, don't use memory foam as a topper, it is temperature sensitive.

My point is this: I am no expert, but I think the new GFC 2" mattress (dual density: natural foam w/ blue on top) with the thick grey cover will be firm enough to keep your elbows and hips from "bottoming-out" AND thin enough to keep a set of camping pillows and/or a summer down blanket/quilt inside when closed. If the mattress is too firm and you make sure the blue foam is facing up, then buy a 1" latex topper and cut it to fit under the fitted sheets. If you did not buy the plaid fitted sheets, then make your own or go to your local dry cleaners and ask if they will make you some. I do not think the 2" mattress is a deal breaker, but it might actually save some space for bedding.

 

I normally go backpacking on nothing but an thermorest and sleep great, maybe has to do with being exhausted though. That said I have the 3" and it's doing the same for me; I'll toss and turn all night long. Have to down a few brews to make it bearable.

Thinking of cutting my current mattress and adding latex on top. Shooting for a 2.5" height (?) might be a good combination with the current mattress and give enough flex in the fabric to be comfortable. All up in the air. I thought I would get used to it, but have 15 or so nights in it and always tossing.

 

I finally got a chance to get pictures of all my modifications to the camper.
I built a fuse panel/charging station.


Added RGB led lights to the top and bottom section.


Got a steal on a @DECKEDUSA drawer system and added an Alu Cab tilting fridge slide and upgraded from a Dometic CFX 65dz to the new 95dz. I also built a custom wire track for the fridge power.


Installed a Waterport into the front passenger corner of the bed.


Also recently installed the fan and I have had the solar/roof rack for a bit. I built brackets and used aluminum extrusion for the cross bars.

What strip lights did you use for the bed?
Did they come with a switch or did you wire one in? Is so where?

They come with a switch and a remote. I put Velcro on the back of the remote and in a couple spots in the camper so I can move it around.

 

I like how you ran them under the bed platform rails. So they light the bed up nice?
