Its 1 cant and it looks newish so i dont think its bad. Im gunna try adjusting the timing idle and doing a quick tune up and maybe a new 02 sensor and see if it helps.

It might be new but is it a CA legal one? Someone may have cheaped out and put a non CA spec cat in it...in which case it will never pass the Nox test

I don't know if a vehicle that old will throw a code like ours will but yea a tune up would be a good place to start

Idk. It was registered in CA not that long ago. So idk if its been changed sense then. Maybe something else failed. Or the PO used a shady smog tech

hard to say...how were you able to buy it without it passing smog? I thought in CA you can't sell a vehicle that can't pass an emissions test, unless maybe it's a non-op one or a parts vehicle.

I thought this was a law on the books as well. Vehicle sale is not complete until the current owner smogs the vehicle prior to sale.

    EDIT: Here you go...
    https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/vr/smogfaq#BM2537

Since it may have been done 90 days prior, I'd find out about it. That sale may be invalid.
They may very well have used a shady process of passing. Rare these days since they really crack down on that stuff and fines/possibility of losing cert to administer test/inspection is very real.

    Repair Assistance Program info -
    https://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/pdf/RA_Requirements.pdf

Perhaps consider retiring it if you qualify (income requirements). If you do qualify, state will pay you to retire it.

None of that info I posted mentions anything about distinguishing between a private person or a business. To me, a seller is a seller. Worth researching bud. Might be able to recoup some of that cash vs. shelling out more trying to resolve it.

Sucks that it failed. Sorry. :censored:

Dude at the smog show was cool and let me do runs for a few hours seeing if i can get it fixed so i dont waste my retest. Sadly no luck. After new plugs, adjusting the idle and timing and a new fuel filter i Managed to get the nox down to passing levels at 15mpg but still to high at 25mpg. Gunna see if maybe a new o2 sensor, clean the injectors and carbon build up in the engine and fixing bvsv on the evap system helps any. Worse case i think it needs a cat though recorders show it was changed not to long ago

Even if the cat was replaced not that long ago maybe it got toasted between now and then, esp if they used a cheap aftermarket one. Those don't last long at all

I have to say, jumping in after 29 pages and seeing the products discussed at the bottom of the page is freaking hilarious. Bleach, Duct Tape, rope, drop cloths and body bags. Good times!
