3rd gen audio build - Joying tacoma headunit

Chances are that there is a single company that makes these unit, then sells them off to retailers to put their own software and mods to them. Im guessing that there is some slight variations in the units, but not enough to justify paying 4 times more for the what is the same thing. It could also be updated versions, one company is using the older, the other is using the newer.

But, it looks like belsee comes out on top with all those usb ports



EDIT (I like edits!) the PX5 cpu that comes in both the belsee and the insane audio one is worse than the intel 8953 that comes in the joying unit. SO, given the choice I would go with the intel joying over the belsee px5... though I may order one to test.

 

Cool. I like threads like this. Gets the ol' noggin movin'.

 

Getting the noggin moving is bad for me... ends up with me buying things that I dont need just to see if it works or not, and if it doesnt work, it goes into the basement to rot.

 

This thing does run hot. I might look at the same but my truck read 120 outside (probably closer to 112 On my weather app) the other day and it was running fine sitting in the sun all day.

 

It will run fine yes, but the way the cpu works is that it will throttle down and become slower as it gets hotter. this is to try to keep its self from burning up.

I need to find what the throttle down temp is on this cpu to get a good idea of what we are looking for.

 

Let me know what you find. Not sure what solution would be, outside what your plans were with the fan. I’m hoping it is okay because reality is the truck is outside a lot and there is little I can do about that with the heat we get. Hopefully it stays to go down soon

 

From what ive read (without actually taking mine apart) the heat spreader on the cpu of these is 40mm x 80mm.
So, a pair of these heat sinks, along with a fan in the top of the case to pull air out and holes in the sides to allow air in should keep it cooler. While it can only be so cool inside the dash, at least there are 2 giant air vents blowing cold air through them on either side of the head unit.

I just ran some test on my unit, after about 5 minutes of use I was hitting 74c (165.2f) thats getting very close to problem temps. 75c is the max im comfortable with on my desktop, for a passive cooled cpu stuck in a tiny box inside of a bigger box in a truck sized box 74c is too high. Im going to take the unit apart and see what Im looking at to get some heatsinks ordered.

 

Man all this heat talk is making me worry. I just ordered this unit the other night.

Also, is there an adapter to use the factory gps antenna?

 

Nothing to worry about, the unit works just fine as is, infact I wouldnt even be doing what I plan to do if it were not for the greater good.... I mean, by all accounts this radio shouldnt of even worked, but I went out on a limb and got it, and it does work. I like to tinker with things to make them better.

Also, the tests I was running were load tests designed to make the cpu get really hot. Normal use im sure it will be just fine.

You dont need the factory gps antenna, it comes with one. I have my gps antenna just stuffed in the dash next to the radio and get between 10-16 satellites locked.

 

Just took my headunit out to replace my cheap rca cables going to my dsp and I noticed something... I have a extra green rca plug thats not being used.... it says v-out... I think this thing has video output! I dont have anything that can take rca video input, but im going to find something and give it a try!

In the pictures on joyings site, the green rca I have is missing from there picture, its just a empty spot.

 

I wanted to circle back and let everyone who may have JBL know that I was able to get this headunit working with my stock amp/speaker setup. It took a week of back-and-forth emails with Joying Support, but they finally suggested I try the simplest solution of all - turning the "Amp" selector to "On". I feel like a bit of a dunce, but hey it worked. I don't have control over the fade selection but all speakers and sub work. This will get me by until the day comes where I pull the trigger on a new speaker setup.

 

I always wondered what that option was for!

 

While I was looking around for the stuff I posted I ran across a wiring harness that specifically for the JBL systems. I wish I could remember where I saw it. Not even 100% sure what exactly it did.

 

Cannot wait to install this in the next few days when I get back. Exciting. Now to find some decent speakers and finish sound deadening. THis should all be completed right around the time I sell that truck haha. Stupid work and having me a 6hr drive away from my truck.

I fully support the evolution, nice to have all the info in one place along with early builds of it.

 

I think my question the other day got buried in all of the potential overheating discussion. I was just curious, with the issues of the track skip buttons on the steering wheel, do the phone answer/hang up buttons still work? Also, does pushing the "MODE/HOLD" button still mute/pause the radio?

 

track skip buttons work (down next track, up previous track, this feels weird because the radio app has the presets going left to right, so up and down doesnt feel right)
phone buttons work for me
mode/hold is goofy, holding the button does not mute/pause for me, but it does change the mode like it should.

 

For my aftermarket radio, mode goes through sources. Mute is a long press on the Vol- button. Maybe that works?
