Recent Sharp Drop in Gas Millage

I know there are 4200214 topics on gas millage, but Ive browsed through them and its gotten me no where.

2008 DC Prerunner, 65k Miles

I purchased my truck June 1st. Since then, Ive put 5000 miles on it since then...

Worst fill up was about 17.4 MPG, best about 22.1 MPG, and for the most part, theyve all been about 18 MPG.

The past two tanks have been about 15-16 MPG and NOTHING has changed. My driving is the same, the same roads, same AC usage, everything. I cannot for the life of me figure out why Ive dropped that far with nothing really changing. This tank Ive even tried to be as soft on the skinny pedal as I can be, and it didn't help.

Suggestions?

My milage is all over the place even though my route remains the same. I try not to worry about it too much since it is not a Prius.

Filter is in the tank, doesn't need to be changed. I think Toyota recommends a change every 100K


Obviously the best thing you can do is change your driving habits, no speeding, no fast acceleration, no heavy braking, do more coasting, etc, etc.

Have you done any maintenance? Tune-up, spark plug change, fuel system cleaner, clean MAF/throttle body, change all oil's and fluids, alignment, balance/rotate tires, proper inflation, etc, etc?
These factors can greatly change your MPG's.

 

I notice the same. I have a 2008 DC with 62000 miles. Sharp drop off in fuel economy. A buddy of mine noticed the same with his V6 Accord. Only thing I keep telling myself is the quality of fuel may have gone down. This may have some affect but I'm gonna try different fuel stations, brands and octane.

I had the same thing happen recently... went from 18.5 down to 17 and it kept dropping. Changed my oil... brought the tires up to 36psi and used the A/C a little bit less... bam, 19.2 MPG.

 

I know a couple of years ago when all of the local stations went to 10% corn gas, my mileage dropped by 10% immediately in every vehicle I own.

Like the others I would check tire air pressure, and just think carefully if anything else might have changed. Good luck.

 

I checked all my tires, all are at 35-37 PSI. I just filled up... 14.7 MPG.

This is quite concerning, considering I have never gotten worse than 17, and usually was closer to 18 or 19.

 

Are you sure you're calculating it right?

 

Gasoline formulation changes during the year to keep the tree huggers happy... Of course it means we burn more gasoline to go the same distance, since it is diluted with corn syrup (ethenol) and other 'eco-friendly' crap to 'reduce emissions'. I get one or more miles per gallon when in Mexico driving the same as here... pure gasoline there, no ethenol!

 

I have a 2007 Prerunner, been averaging around 22 mpg. Make sure you put the highest octane 91 or better because of the 10% corn their using. When you fill up your tank do not overfill stop when it clicks off to calculate properly each time. Put in a better airfilter APO Pro S I believe its called. Try and keep your RPM's around 1500 if you can, NO! quick starts on the Freeway or your lose mpg very fast. I keep all my tire's inflated around 34psi. Remember the larger the tires and other equipment you add on will lower your mpg also. Hope that helps!
