Changed the fluid on my 09 taco diff today. Used valvoline 75-90 as my research suggested. Main question is since my truck is a 2wd 5 lug do I need to add any additives of any kind? Never got a clear answer on that from my research. I added 3 quarts to the rear end after it drained and it’s right at the full hole now. Thanks guys

It shouldn't need any additives as long as it's not limited slip.

I believe 09+ use brake actuated LSD instead of Mechanical LSD.
If this is true, you should not need the additive.
Since I’m not 100% certain, I was hesitant to answer this post earlier.

You can also refer to the post below to see if you have the LSD Fluid sticker on the rear diff.
This post also states on the first line line of the post that 09+ do not need the additive.

    Hope this helps.

You do not need any additives. You do need King’s though.

Admittedly, my knowledge of 5 lugs is limited, but I seriously, seriously doubt that Toyota made a 5 lug TRD sport. Since the OPs truck doesn't have a skewp, or color matched door handles and mirrors, No, he doesn't have a LSD, and therefore doesn't need friction modifier additive.

I agree, but fwiw the mechanical lsd was available on SR5 as well, as an option.

Not applicable to this but thought I’d share the info.

Was it still mechanical in the 09+ 5 Lug?
That seems to be the missing information, I have not found a definitive answer.
I believe all 6 lug were Brake Actuated after 09+
    Previous years were Mechanical.

    Too few to list.
As far as I know, 5 lugs had no LSD before '09 or after. Only 6 lugs Sport got the LSD before '09.

In regards to 6 lugs, you are correct. 05-08 is mechanical lsd. After that, it’s all brake actuated, so the diff itself is just an open diff.

If that container is an image of the fluid that you drained, it looks to be new.

I agree. That's a clean and nice looking 5 lug. I actually kinda like it with the unpainted bumpers.

As for the rear diff fluid change, is the diff on a 5 lug the same as the 6 lug? Obviously taking out specifics of mechanical/electronic LSD
