what's the best way to remove factory hangers? take a grinder to the head of the rivets then drill out?

Yes. Quality drill bits and a bunch of bits.

I also used something like this and a 2lb sledge to free the rivets.

i may try to drill out and then try to make a friend with a plasma cutter when frustration reaches level 12.

how many 1/2" bits could one expect to go through in this endeavor?

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

If your drilling I recommend drilling in stages starting with a smaller hole. Trying with the 1/2" to start is going to be hard on the bits.

A small pilot hole (3/16”) followed by this step bit does really well if you’re gonna drill. Just remember to keep speed low and plenty of lube. Patience is key.

Though I recommend a different approach. Grind heads off rivets, and use a ball joint press and small grade 8 bolt to press them out. Works wonders. Second set of hands helps to line everything up.

^^^this. Get the loaner BJ press from AutoZone, grind off the rivet heads, and it's an easy day.

Drilling and hammering is much fuckery.

There is a video of how to do it with BJ press. I have a real nice one, so I will be using this method.

I tried 3 different ways (just drill bits, pilot hole + step bit, and grinding the heads off) and for me and my hangers the grinder was the quickest and easiest. 2nd best was the step bit.

Good luck! It's really not difficult at all.

I did the same with the chisel and grind flush again. Works really well. I will say the BJ press will get the side ones too but it’s fucking annoying getting it all lined up. That’s why I suggest a second set it hands. I was able to get one but the rest I had to start drilling out and then pop out with a pointy chisel.
