Thanks (that is him in my profile pic too (on the beach) - he is our 3rd (he will be 4 this month) - we dabble in Schutzhund and he is trained, but we do not compete - we used to be more into it. GSDs are terrific - my 3 kids (now 16,17 and 18) were raised always having 1 around them. We have a horse farm (on a small river) and whenever they were/are our out on the property, fishing, kayaking, or just roaming, a GSD was always beside them - what a comfort. I LOVE dogs and have met very few I do not like (unlike people) however I can not imagine life without a German Shepherd near me. Unfortunately, the breed is overbred (not unlike many breeds) and reputable breeders/brokers are very limited around the US and Germany. Perhaps you will get another - NEVER a replacement but another friend.

Mine was my service dog (narcotics detection) and later our family pet. Born in Germany from old German stock. I retired him early so he could enjoy just being a dog and a pet, although to be honest I always treated him as such and his work never suffered for it despite what you hear from many in the profession. He was with me literally 24/7 for over ten years.

I can’t bring myself to get another because when he died it ripped my heart out and I don’t want to go through that again. It’s funny but I was dreaming about him last night again, and then I saw your post this morning. He’s been gone nine years now and still there isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t think about him. Give yours an extra treat for me.

Will do - I fully understand...my last GSD died 5 years ago - (went by the name of Major - can't remember his OFFICIAL German name, LOL) - had him almost 10 years. I had a massive heart attack just before Major passed (cancer) and when he died I actually thought I would not make it., especially with my weakened heart. I did not want to even consider another - usually it is a LONG wait with the folks we deal with. My wife contacted a broker that we have dealt with and told him she did not want our family without a GSD - both companionship but safety too, as I travel with business and our home being a horse farm out in a rural area. My wife arranged to get another within the year and convinced me to take him (actually to write the checks). I must say, at first I was not as engaged as I should have been - but looking back, Chief helped me as much as it did my wife and kids. I tell you this story because YOU obviously can understand that I too think about Major EVERY day (many times) and will NEVER get over him. I desperately love Chief (our current) but there will never be another Major (for me).

Wonderful Pic!! I laughed out loud when I saw the broom in the background!!! GSDs have 1 shedding season - daily!! How fortunate you were to have such a friend!

Lol, good eye! I used to joke that I brushed the equivalent of another dog half his size off of him per day. Here’s another couple pics of him I’m very fond of:

Most cold hardy beast I’ve ever seen... :)

GREAT pics - such happiness in the eyes (your's too I bet)!!!! We get very little snow (TN) but ours loves it when it comes. All of ours, particularly this one loves to swim in the river...GSDs usually enjoy wherever they are (most dogs do). My wife never complains about the hair as she says:" as she sweeps it she is reminded about how Blessed we are to own such a great creature"! I don't think she is kidding, but after 27 years of marriage, when she says she is happy I just assume she is not being sarcastic (and I 'm not sweeping).

Sorry guys. Didn’t meant to hijack the thread. It’s just another way for me to keep his memory alive I guess. That’s why I’m always here. I live it vicariously through your pics. Love your pups, they’re only with us a short time.

It's heart warming to know these guys aren't all business. They need to be dogs too.

Most handlers love their dogs like their own children. Unfortunately, some out there think of them as merely tools. Good thing is they are few and far between though...

Thanks! He passed 4 years ago - our current is above him (and on my profile pic). Aside from my wife of 27 years and 3 kids and mom - he is THE love of my life.
