Whenever you go on a Tacoma forum, kbb undervalues Tacoma. When you're on a mustang forum, they undervalue mustang... kbb doesn't value anything, they collect data and give it back. Of 1000 reported sales say vehicle x sold at y value. X is worth y to the average market.

People who own x often disagree, they then go on a forum of like minded individuals and find 5 people that say x is worth 10y and ignore all collected data. I work with this for a living, not exactly a rare phenomena. :)

The reason banks only lend based on kbb or nada is because they don't care at all about your personal feelings. They are loaning you money as an investment. If you default they have to be able to recover that initial investment, so they will not lend more than the market says they can recover if they have to resell it themselves.

You can certainly pay 10x what everyone else had paid, but you'll need to bring cash to make up the difference as the bank isn't going to lend that amount. And if they repo the only loss will be to the person that overpaid.

So to that end I reiterate, if I can take a little travel and buy something for half of what convenience costs, it's crazy to go the convenient route.

    Too few to list.
For $16K, you can find a 1st Gen that is exactly what you are looking for. They are out there. I found mine in Nevada and another in San Diego. 2001 AC OR 4x4 ($13.5K with 80K) and 2004 AC OR 4x4 both 5spd ($15.5K with 43K).

I would really prefer an access cab because I want a full size bed.

I have a standard cab 2wd right now and a bag and a person barely fit

Yup. Looks like I’m going to sac this weekend.

My craigslist keywords were “Tacoma 4x4” “Tacoma 4wd” and “Tacoma trd” and this just missed all of em.

    Thanks!

Edit: I called the dealer and the mentioned “it’s cheap because it was registered out of state”

I’m not sure why that would affect sales price unless it was from Montana but I’m going to see it anyway.

Aha. Carfax tells all. Spent its entire life in Delaware

Nice you got it! It’s an east coast truck.

Carfax’s are handy but keep in mind carfaxs only show what’s reported

I’m still gonna go see it but I’m going to be extra skeptical. If I smell something fishy I’m out.

that is a reasonable mileage truck?!? if the interior and that is looking swell (as well as the mechanicals) do you consider getting that price backed down a bit for any potential frame issues?

I would consider 135k reasonable. Less than 100k and you’re paying a super premium. Less than 80k mega premium or something is wrong.

If there is no rust and it’s absolutely 100% perfect and I’m confident I won’t have issues I would pay that. But if I’m skeptical at all I’m going to negotiate or more than likely just pass.

This seller has some pretty questionable reviews, which I take with a grain of salt because no two used cars are the same. But I can be patient.

could be there was a frame replacement done already? would that show on the carfax?

i do find it strange that a truck was in the east and now is in the west, but there are many reasons that could be

but I had been looking at an early 2000 model a few months ago here with 5 previous owners and had been everywhere from MI to PA to MO to here and they wanted more than what you are looking at. The mechanicals did not sound good while it was running in front of me.
They must've sold it after a month because I no longer saw it listed online

i still do not understand why there is such a huge range of values with comparing KBB and NADA (i consider ~$9k to be a rather large range)

can you run the VIN on the Toyota.com website somewhere and see the history going back to the early 2000s?

Sure you can run the VIN and see what comes up. I called and talked to the sales man and just asked bluntly ”all I need is a yes or no, is there rust on the frame?”

His reply yes because its from out of state.

There are no pics on the website of the frame.

The price is a bit low so it would make sense

Question is how bad is the rust?
My heart of hearts says a used dealer doesnt price it lower than market for surface rust.

But theres only one way to find out right?

During my double cab search I found a bunch of access cabs out west in California , Washington even some in my home state of Texas. Double cabs were hard to find I ended flying to Montana for mine.. such a fun road trip

I bought this truck brand new. It has been on many off road adventures to no where. Very reliable and has the 2.7 engine with automatic transmission. This truck was used for a hunting rig and is set up to go exploring. It has LEDS lights and a wench front and rear. The rack can be used for hauling lumber during the week or extra equipment on your adventure in the outdoors. The shell has a hatch used for predator hunting and an outlet for spot light. , All scheduled maintenance, All records, Custom wheels, Excellent condition, Looks & drives great, New paint, New tires, No accidents, Non-smoker, One owner, Seats like new, Title in hand, Very clean interior

Yeah, some people think adding mods increases the value of what it cost to mod
