has anyone installed a cold air intake and what are the results? I am thinking of adding a K & N and just wanted some feedback.

Not sure what gen you're running, but on my 1st gen, I had a Volant CAI on there. Box was huge, had to uninstall every time when I needed to replace passenger headlight. Took up a bunch of space- not sure if it actually did anything for me. Moved to California, couldn't pass SMOG test, with it, so I re-installed factory box. Now running the ebay snorkel. Not sure if any of it has done anything for me performance-wise, but it was fun to hear the volant.

Save your money. They ain’t worth it.

Use the money for armor or tyres.

KnN filters are not good for any sandy or heavy dusty environment unless pre filtered.

You know you have CAI from the factory, right?

Other than that, the search function will reveal literally hundreds of threads on the topic across all generations.

    Cliffs notes:

They look cool, make more noise and have fairly poor filtration. Over oil and make a mess of your intake.

If you MUST have another CAI, suggest you look for a TRD model and dry filter.

Although an aftermarket CAI can improve the throttle response, don't expect a noticeable hp gain.

I just installed mine, I haven't had any crazy horsepower but the truck feels a little more responsive... IDK maybe the placebo effect lol, but I was looking at a K&N and didn't want to drop $320 so I actually found a lesser known brand AF Dynamics, they make for the 2.7l and 4.0l taco's, I'll leave the link to both. Mine was $160, way better price and still great quality.

I threw an Injen on my 3rd Gen. It sounds nice at 3500-4500 RPM. Lol.

I just ordered an airaid (dry) with a pre-filter. I'll let you know how it is. I wanted a closed airbox like the stock one

I had the TRD CAI on my 2018 sport, picked it up from the dealer after install, literally couldn't tell a difference with noise or performance. I'm hoping the airaid is louder, not really expecting anything related to performance

I just got a tacoma (SR5) and was curious about this myself. So far my research doesn't seem too promising. Seems pretty subjective. Some people swear it, others say don't waste your money.

Here is an article on K&N filters
    https://nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html

For me and my intended use of my truck, the standard filters are probably best. I may consider a 'middle ground' setup with an Intake flow accelerator (PTR03-35160-AE) and a Silicone Air Intake Hose (57-1600-BLK.)

in the end, not sure it will do much? might just be "fun to do" =)

DFA22C59-F882-4D58-9BB0-95A502CF554B.jpg I installed an aFe magnum force stage 2 intake on mine and it is significantly louder (in a good way) in the higher rpm range. It seems to have slightly better performance but I could just be crazy.

Does it drone pretty good right at 4k rpm?

I dont think they make a huge difference, if you want more volume they sound pretty cool.

That’s a really interesting read and further supports my stance on oiled filters.

I personally think it sounds good. It’s a little loud and obnoxious in the cab, I love it. :burnrubber:

Sorry I misread that. Yes, there is a drone if you keep it 4K. It’s really more of an initial sound though
