Show us your truck bed sleeping platform/drawer/storage systems

The drawers aren't fancy, just 1/2" ply with a 3/8" ply bottom. What keeps the middle from dragging are the 1X dividers that segregate the tools and parts stored. The pulley is attached to the front cross piece and the back of the drawer. It rolls easily enough that I tie it off to a boat cleat to secure it but on a grade there's enough weight that I think I'll go to a double pulley on it. The wheels are mouted under the blocks next to the glue bottles on the left and 2 boxes in on the right, similarly up front.

Light and cheap drove my build along with a weight forward goal. I used some scrap 1 x 8 maple which is lighter and plenty if you use a vertical center support and 1/2" ply is also all you need. The support can also be used for storage of your high lift or other long items(mine holds 3', 4', 6' levels and a straight edge clamp.

The space on the left is for my saw stand.

 

I'm considering going with the Bedrug and just using a memory foam mattress without a platform. Like others I want to be able to sit up in the bed without scratching my head on the raw fiberglass and I can put excess cargo into the cab if needed.

I'm wondering how the Bedrug is for being the floor of a sleeping area, does it smell or have a lot of excess threads the can be breathed in? Also does it keep the dust out of the bed better than the standard mat? Every couple of months I have to take everything out of the bed and clean out the dust that builds up from just regular driving.

 

I'd think the mat would be easier to clean than the rug. To clean a rug you have to drape it over something and beat the daylights out of it and even then it's not as clean. Likewise smells are more able to get stuck in the fibers.

 

The BedRug is easy to clean. Given what is made of (fibers in the plastic family) it is hard to stain and is impervious to most things, gasoline and oil included.

To clean, pull it out, slather on soap or degreaser, and wash off.

Much easier to maintain than regular carpet.

 

I'm also hoping that the way the bedrug is installed, basically form fit and velcro'd around the top, that it will keep more dust out of the bed. Then just pull the bedrug out occasionally and clean the dust that collects on the underside.
$400 is a little steep for me right now but I might wait and get one on sale or something.

 

What does everyone think of the Decked drawer system? Thinking about getting this setup.

 

My bed rug doesn’t smell at all after 2 years and I use the bed a ton. I just vacuum it every now and then. I throw a mattress on it whenever I go on long trips and it’s perfect and cozy. Definitely helps when it’s cold out too.

 

My buddy used to be a traveling sales rep for them so I checked them out pretty good. I really liked the system. Super smooth operation and lock solid stable.
I dont have one as they didn't make a midsized pickup version when he was working for them. So I welded up my own system like it.
The only real issue I have with it is that since they are built for so many trucks, they try and share as many parts as possible. So I have a 6' bed, but the drawers are short enough to be able to fit in the 5' bed. Then they just put a larger top deck on the system and it looks like it takes the entire bed. So basically I hate all the wasted space they have.

 

Thank you for the good review on our system. We appreciate that. I do have to correct you though. While we do use many of the same parts from system to system, we do not use the same length drawers for the short and long bed systems. In fact, our midsize long bed system's drawers are 64.7" long, which is 11.7" longer than the short bed drawers at 53". Hopefully that can make you feel better about the wasted space. While we try to minimize the loss of space, there is a give and take and we are constantly trying to come up with new ways to improve.

 

Good to know, but was still to much wasted space. My drawers are within 1/2" of the length of the 6' bed. on a midsize truck, the beds are already pretty small, so wasting precious space sucks when trying to store items such as fishing poles and skis.

 

Built a basic bed for solo camping and added an extension for the +1. Setup is completely removable and takes 2 minutes to remove. Plan is to make a tarp/canvas cover for when the camper glass is up and is tailgate down. Also, any recommendations for a mattress topper?

 

Nice, heavy, expensive, and a fair amount of wasted space, hence this thread and all the different builds in it but they still sell so somebody is buying.

 

Nice setups guys. I just keep it simple with a small blowup mattress. Light weight, cheap, and easy to remove. The left side of the bed can fit some other items as well. BTW, I would be fine with a sleeping bag, but this setup is the only way the wife will consider getting back there

 

100%. I built my platform with the main plan being drawers to store and protect fishing poles and skis. Being able to camp was a plus, but way down the line. I love the platform for putting items in the bed. The only negative I have is that I have 2 5 gallon VP gas jugs. With the platform in, the jugs are to tall with the extended nozzles so I store them with the regular caps.

How do you like the ball bearings instead of using a slide/skateboard bearings? Have you experienced any problems with them sticking? Also do you have anyway of stopping the drawer coming out completely?

What are people using for the top piece of wood? 1/2" or 3/4" ?

 

I used 3/4". It's a little heavier than 1/2", but 1/2" tends to flex in the middle.

 

Thanks. My drawer is going to be 18" wide, and im only building a single drawer. I think im also going to put horse stall mat on the top, and maybe some deck boards on top of that.

Im not going to be sleeping on it, but it will have to hold some storage boxes. It will also be outdoors, as I don't have a cap
