I purchased a 2019 tacoma standard in March. After a few weeks of getting to know the truck, I noticed some hesitation especially when going up hill. At first I thought it was the rough road but the same thing happened on a newly paved surface. Then I tried switching fuels and that made no difference. I brought it into the dealership and the tech test drove it and agreed that it was a problem. It was in the shop for 13 days. I was initially told it was bad fuel. A Tech from headquarters came out and stated that what the truck was doing was normal for this vehicle. Also there is a metallic sounding noise heard best when the windows are rolled down after shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to third. They confirmed the noise but could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. The dealership service department told me that since it was signed off by Toyota headquarters that I would have to deal with them . They would not deal with these issues any longer.
Thats when the fun began. Multiple calls with promises to get back to me and not calling back. Told to take it to another dealership, told that it was given back to the dealership to handle, finally after several weeks I was told that there was nothing they would do, since the tech signed it off as normal .
So now the dealership won't look at the truck for this particular problem, and in order to apply for the lemon law in Massachusetts you have to have the vehicle looked at three times.
Question: Does anyone else have a similar problem with a similar tacoma/ Does anyone have experience with the lemon law process. Help

    Too few to list.
Welcome to the site. I have not experienced the issue you are talking about but I have driven a few 3rd Gen manuals as well as the auto. The hesitation is more noticeable in the auto but not so much in the manual. It's the drive by wire system as well as the stock ecm tuning. I'm surprised you didn't mention the rev hang. I suggest you get either OVtune or HPTuners and change your trans fluid to Redline to start with.

You can bring it to another dealership and have them look for an issue but unfortunately to Toyota, everything is "normal".

Wow, that blows. Without the truck for several weeks only to get a shrug-n-shove? Hope you can find a competent dealer to sort this out.

Tacoma may go extinct if Toyota continues to ignore these "normal" problems.

I think the hesitation you’re describing is the stutter mentioned in a ton of threads and has been deemed “normal”. It’s like driving a manual in too high of a gear and it starts to bog and buck a little bit right?

Odd, I too can hear a metallic noise/clank in the first couple gears when I accelerate but goes away once I let off the gas a little.

My new 6mt tacoma has a sound when I change gears 1-2-3 but it is the plates on the tranny... talked to a friend of mine (mechanic) and he told me that the sound on the tranny is good, it means everything is tight he said, it should be like that, tight.. so I don’t mind about that to... I quite don’t feel the 270+ horses... but I definitely like my truck.... the engine makes sounds.. but nothing that catches the ear so I’m good...

Sounds like a manual I took for a test drive. I couldn't believe what a piece of crap that was. I'd shift step on the gas and it puke out and almost stall. Handed the keys to the salesman and see yah latter!

It is interesting... how someone can say manual is a crap and I say the exact opposite... I had an 2016 taco auto and I did not like it... it is so subjective.. every individual will feel think different... that’s why it is so difficult to ask for opinions here in Tw..

My personal case: love my manual Tacoma. With its sounds and all that...

Least you didn't get the auto if you think the manual is bad. And in mass it has to affect safety for it to be a lemon. Mine kept dying and leaving me stranded over the winter, been through 4 batteries in a few months. Multiple shop days, towed in etc. Didn't know what it is, but since they didn't consider it a safety issue there was nothing I could do since it would die when parked. Toyota stated they would just keep replacing batteries. Toyo doesn't really fix things, is more of a band aid.

Try the tune. I see a lot of owners much happier after getting it.

Mine both does the low-rpm stutter, which a tech told me is “due to it’s two modes of fuel injection and it switching between them” -oh, you mean it’s poorly tuned??- he actually told me to not shift up before 3k — my friend has the automatic and it upshifts /well/ before 3k —-& the rattle. I’ve seen on this forum many report being told rattle is normal — but no one knows whats causing it haha. Thats what i always want to know when i’m told something is “normal” - what it is, and why it /won’t/ affect longevity

Some guy replaced his... throwout bearing? I think? With a URD kit, says his noise went away.

Sounds to me like you shifted too soon by not taking it to high enough rpms (3000 at least) and then shift.

I have found that there is great flexibility with the MT. Keep it at around 2,000rpm to maximize fuel economy but with poor throttle response OR keep it at 3,500rpm or higher for best power and throttle response but then the fuel economy tanks.

You've only got a few miles on it, I'd probably drive it a bit. I'll also say that if you're getting on the gas and it hesitates and bucks, you might double check the ECU software version, they did an update last year, so you'll want to verify you have it. Also keep in mind there's nothing in the basement, I wouldn't shift any less than 2500 rpm and usually over 3000 rpm.

Also, while we're talking about it, if you're in gear and coming down below 1500 rpm there's a little bump of fuel, so you'll feel a surge. This is normal / by design, although it can be disconcerting and the OV tune removes it. (I hear, I don't have the tune.)

Did you follow the suggested break in procedure?

    Mine is similar.
Hesitation in lower gear acceleration is definitely noticeable, but I've learned to live with it.
The only time I hear metallic noise from the tranny is if it rocks back and forth too far... sometimes over railroad tracks in 1st or 2nd, or if it lugs too much during take off.
