Hey guys . I’m new here and unfortunately my first post is a negative one . I had my tailgate stolen last Saturday . I made the police report and talked to my insurrance. I’ll be getting married soon and don’t really want to pay the 1k deductible . I seen a tailgate on offer up for 350 and my question is wether I should get it or just suck it up and pay the deductible ?

Get the cheap one. No reason to involve insurance unless the cost is more than the deduct.

But, make sure the new one has intact wiring, has the camera in it and includes all the things your missing... also ask if you can have the key for it otherwise they can just steal it again... also if its the same color as yours, try your key in it, see if its your tailgate.

I doubt it’s mine since the posting was up the day before mine got stolen. I talked to the guy and he said he doesn’t have the key for it since he just gets them from his buddy at the junkyard . You guys think that’ll be a problem down the road

You are probably talking to guy that stole yours, or at least his "buddy" who is the supplier stole yours. I would be concerned about this transaction.

Yea his “buddy”... you never see Tacoma’s at junk yards. Especially new ones. Because they are sold at auctions. Most get fixed and resold. Some do get stripped down for parts but it’s usually by big companies that sell salvaged parts. Not guys in junk yards.

    That’s a stolen tailgate.

I would at the very least meet with the guy and let him know that you want to buy, but really what you are doing is testing your key on "his" tailgate. If it's a match, it's yours.

Without a key or a way to lock it, they will just take it again.
Probably part of their game. They take a gate, sell it with no key, two days later take it again and sell to someone else. They could have sold this same tailgate multiple times already.

Well, do you want to pay $350 or $1K? Was your tailgate unlocked when it was stolen?

That sucks. That just goes to show that lock is bullshit that's why I've been hesitant buying pop n lock for my 2nd gen. I did however bought @christian06 anti theft lock instead.

Forget the key, that lock obviously didn't work the first time. There are two kinds of locks being sold within this forum.

Don't go the Insurance route. Your deductible is only the beginning. They will drop your good driver deduction and your "Distinguished Driver" deduction if you have one. Cost over three years: $3200. If your in the LA area, there is a guy in the Compton area with a warehouse full of them hanging on the walls, all colors, all years, $250.00 w/o camera,$300 with.
