adding rear speakers to 3rd gen access cab ?

has anyone here added rear speakers to there 3rd gen access? i have a utility package and curious as to where i can tap into gain speaker signals for the rear and what size speaker and what grilles to use?


also anyone added a subwoofer to a access cab w/ utility package? pics?

You'll have to remove the rear panels and door panels to see if your vehicle has the connectors.

 

Yeah I got impatient and tore it all apart the other day. Realized afterward that the Utility model did not come pre-wired for rear speakers. So I just ran the wiring and spliced into the factory radio harness. It was a bit of a pain but well worth it in the end. I hope these photos help someone else. Luckily I stumbled onto a YouTube video that showed the wiring harness layout.

I have a utility package and just added rear speakers this weekend, under the panels that run along the doors, the speaker wires exist. they just stop somewhere before entering the door. I didnt bother getting to the end, as once you remove the rear door panels you dont have outlets anyway, so i just tapped into them. nice and easy and mounted new speakers into the doors. you will have to remove the covers but it already has grills too.

I REPEAT UTILITY PACKAGE DOES HAVE A REAR SPEAKER WIRE HARNESS AND SPEAKERS RUNNING TO THE BACK. BLACK AND WHITE ON THE DRIVER SIDE GREEN AND BLUE ON THE PASSENGER>

So you didn't get to the BO1/BP1 connectors?

 

not sure what those are man, but i didnt, i just used a wire splitter to tap into the existing harness, i think its capped at a dead end behind a panel way in the back, but i just tapped at a pretty convenient location where i could run new wire to new speakers into the rear panels.

i took out the headunit expecting to see no 6 pin harness (as you may know the 10 pin part of the radio harness controls the front speakers, and steering wheel controls) the 6 pin is only for the rear speakers...

When i pulled out the unit i was shocked to find out a 6 pin harness, i attempted to follow it back within the dash and could see it was pretty long. i then proceeded to splice the covered wire harness that runs under the kick board and step panels on both sides of the truck. I identified 2 wires on each size approximately 12-14 gauge.... the colors matched the harness, and i tapped them to find out they indeed were feeding signal to the back...

Followed them even further but thats where i hit a pretty neat, taped up nest of OEM wiring, likely for 3rd brake light, open door indicators, and maybe the dead end of rear speaker wires... i didnt mess with it and just tapped right beneath the door step panels. pics coming soon

 

I wish I would have been as patient as you. I didn’t feel like searching for wiring so I just ran new wires all the way up. I probably ended up spending more time than necessary but it all worked out in the end. For those holes in the speaker covers I picked up some cheap body panel retainers from an auto parts store and just glued them in.

That was my next thing on the agenda! Thank you for the link, the holes are uniform-ish, i actually took a lighter to it to remove those plastic fastners, to see if they could shift out, they did but they were not meant to be reused, so those will work out perfectly

 

I found the speaker wires on my 2020 Tacoma Access Cab behind the plastic molding between the back window and the access door. They are in the connector with all the other wires going to the door and just stop there. So Toyota put on a harness that does not have all the wiring in the door leaving the speaker wires out. but the speaker wires are there and thanks to your post i was able to find them. those panels snap ons :> just pull.

 

Access cab base model rear speakers wire ends at plug behind panel. I de pinned from plug and ran wire to door.

 

I opened that floor cover and inside the driver's side I found 6 white wires and 4 black wires. I quit. Went back at it later and noticed one black and one white were intertwined, that's the ones you need. On the other side the blue and green are the same way.

 

You should try my method. Look behind the corner panels in the back. It a white connector with 5 wires. They will be the two thick wires on both drivers side and passenger side. I fished the wires thru with a zip tie.

 

I went the route of new HU and larger speaker wire to the whole truck. I screwed my two 6.5" mid ranges in the door panel where they were the flattest. Has worked out well so far. I built a false floor for my two 10 inch subs to sit on.
