The paint on my drivers side door is pealing off. I talked to Toyota and the dealership yesterday. Hoping they cover it. Anyone else have an issue with paint?

Why would they cover the paint on a 6 year old vehicle? I have a 2013 in black in the Louisiana sun and so far so good.

What's strange here is I see no surfacer. Only the E.D and what appears to be bare metal?

Explain E.D. - I am trying to figure out what is going on in that pic - you are seeing manufacturing defect? It looks blistered out in a weird way.

A corrosion coat that is applied (typical dipped) prior to primer. Some colors are primer-less though. So it's hard to know.

Electro disposition. It's the first coat that is applied to the vehicle, electrically charged so it gets everywhere. Then surfacer, white or grey depending on what color the topcoat is going to be.

I've got the exact same peeling issue on my 2015 at the top of the drivers door. MGM color for reference. Kept meaning to bring it to toyota... but the warranty is up anyway...

It will not be covered unless you bought an extended warranty for the paint.

These issues are 99% due to poor paint care not an underlying paint defect.

This is a common area to flake... again due to improper paint care (yearly clay bar and applying regular paint sealants).

Particles embed on these areas and when you don’t clay bar, they corrode over time and breakdown the paint so it begins flaking.

I don't disagree with you on this can stem from poor paint care... but I feel like it's a little to early for it to be flaking and peeling this bad... when the rest of the truck is fine. I take pretty good care of the truck. Keeping sure to wash it and wax it, especially in winter with all the salt.

I need to just go to a body shop and have them spray it and blend it before it gets too bad.

I knew it was out of warranty so I never bothered to go to the dealer...

Here's a few shots of mine ... had I taken care of it when it first started it wouldn't have been so bad... just havent had the time.

Thats true but it really doesnt take much to incur paint damage. I bought my 2013 used in 2015 and it already had paint flaking on the plastic due to severely etched paint from bug guts left to bake on it.
Plus wax lasts maybe 3-4 weeks. Its not a good paint protector. It was 40 years ago before modern synthetic products.

I have pitting in these areas myself and I’m a detailer who is regularly caring for my truck. The doors above the base of the windows up is really exposed to debris from the road too. This does not help.

Yea totally - just feel like the paint quality isn't there. I had a 2001 that I bought in 2012? That definitely was taken super great care of paint wise and even though it had some rust spots it wasnt flaking at all... in fact the overall paint finish was smoother and better then this truck...

The flakes bug me a little... but I'm kinda over it now. It's a truck, I use it as such... it gets some pinstripes here and there... I want to get it repaired to keep it from spreading... but it doesn't have to be perfect. I don't plan on getting rid of the truck anytime soon

Toyota sometimes uses a dark grey primer on dark colors, light grey on lighter colors and white on white colors. In the past, they would even use white primer on certain reds to create more "pop"

I just got back from the dealership and it has been approved for a repaint and blend. There were 2 other 2013 Tacomas there for paint repairs as well. So it's a known issue and even vehicles past their paint warranty are being repaired.

Good to know! I guess I need to visit a dealer.

I doubt they gave you a service bulletin or anything did they?

Just picked up my truck. Paint looks great. Even blended it to fender and extended cab panel.20190822_144446.jpg

Yes, I have a paint problem. It's 10 years old, true, but still the roof has pealed and faded and overall has not aged well. I had an 18 year old GMC that sat out all the time like this one does and this didn't happen. Started about 3 years ago.
