Initial oil change

    Hi.
    My 2019 TRD Off Road has 500 miles on the odometer. I’m old school, so I’m thinking of changing the initial engine break-in oil. With new aluminum engines and over head cam technology, is this required? The dealership said “see you at 5000 miles”.

    Just a heads-up this is the most messy engine i've ever changed oil on. Take the skid plates off or you'll be cleaning oil out.

    I'm at 500 miles also. The oil is clean. Super clean.

    I wouldn't bother till 2500....

    I changed mine at 850 and the weird part is my MPG started going up. It could be a fluke or the computer learning. I feel much better and can sleep at night knowing the break in oil is out

    Forgo the dealer oil change, do it yourself always and make that known during the dealer inspections. Tape a note on your dash and run a piece of tape across your skid plate and drain plug marked "Do Not Change Oil".

    I haven’t gotten around to looking at my manual, but I would definitely see what it recommends. I know on certain new vehicles additives are used to assist with the break in procedure. I wouldn’t change the oil too soon if those were added in the Tacoma. Will it have catastrophic damage if you do change it? Probably not, but I wouldn’t until it’s recommended. I think the service intervals on 3rd gens are every 10k miles though after the first oil change.

    The 5k service is a tire rotation and inspection. The 1st oil change is not due until 10k miles, unless you operate your vehicle according to the "severe duty" schedule.

    And yes....10k miles is perfectly acceptable with modern synthetic oil and engines. If you're stuck in 1977 and can't imagine oil being in there that long....then change it. You'll do no harm either way.

    And to clarify....there is no "break-in oil". They come straight from Alabama with "regular"
    $54 0w-20 oil Toyota/ exxon mobil Case of 6 Quarts Full Synthetic TGMO SN 0W-20 Oil
    0w-20 oil synthetic as the factory fill.

    This should be oil thread # 6637 this week...with 1845 of them related to initial oil changes or "WTF....10k mile oil change!".

    Just to be extra sure, I changed out all lubricants on my 2017 Off Road at ~5KI miles (engine oil & filter, both differentials, transmission, etc.). I just changed engine oil & filter yesterday, at 39,xxx miles.

    I’d just wait and change it at 5k. There’s no break in oil for these engines, and likely zero benefit from changing it out extra early. It’s simply Toyota Synthetic 0w-20 (Mobil product). These trucks are also not picky on oil so run any properly rated 0w-20 and you’ll be just fine. I’ve seen a few fleet 3rd gens that are almost reaching 200k miles, and they’ve run Supertech 0w-20 (rebranded Walmart) the majority of those miles.

    My first oil change is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10k miles. Pulled the dipstick, still looks pretty dang clean...

    My opinion, change at 5k miles if you're paranoid, or fall under the heavy use category (off-roading, cold starts, etc). Any oil change before that is probably a huge waste of time and money.

    Go ahead and change it. Keep the oil companies rich. Not like the Toyota engineers know what their doing anyways. With this truck engine being high performance I’d be worried about break in for sure. Might be expensive to change this beast out some day.

    I’ve asked several (2) shop owners and they do their new vehicles at 3k-5k. I’m doing mine at 5k then follow the severed schedule cuz I do a lot of short trips.

    Sounds a bit extreme. If I still have mine in December they're changing the oil and fix all the other stuff that's wrong with it

    I haven't seen an engine blow in 30 years unless it was run with no oil or someone put transmission fluid in. Not a lawnmower, car or truck. 10k is nothing to worry about.
