I was crawling under to look for second time if my driveshaft has grease zerks to hit (NOPE) 2017 v6 sport 4x4, and also check condition of my undercoating (still looking good) and saw this. at 22,000 miles. Going to dealer this week likely Monday. My bumper to bumper is out 12/23 this year. Still have powertrain 5 year / 60k.

Will report back with what they say and repair. Only thing it can be is gear oil from the T case.

Well they had it for about 20-30 minutes. S advisor came out and told me it was "seepage". Which i'd say its right between and seep and and leak. They cleaned it off and put leak dye in T case and told me to drive for a 1000 miles or so and bring back in and they will see it it leaks enough by then to "qualify" to do the warranty repair then. Kinda of bull crap kicking the can down the road but at least i am being proactive and getting it documented. If they do not want too fix it the second time I will threaten to talk to service manager and call Toyota corporate and send pictures.

They said right now "Toyota won't let them touch it" ?

I interpret the comment best explained in a popular meme (below) floating around the interwebz. I think he was just trying to stir the pot. :stirthepot:

Hopefully they take care of the issue with your transmission. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Not a big deal at the moment but it’s not going to get any better. This is the standard response from most dealerships/manufacturers these days.
Follow up with it as they asked and I’m sure they will handle it.

    Here's my two cents FWIW:
I would snug up the drain plug. Can't hurt to double check it's tightness.
I wouldn't go in and "threaten" to do anything. You will likely have better results if you keep your cool and have a mature conversation with the dealership folks. And I recommend you document those discussions.

I think you are right about the staining on the transfer case housing. The drain plug and bracket look to have oil on them.

talk about over reacting, if you just touch it with ur fingertip you can tell right away its not gear oil, plus there probably isn't any oil puddles under the transfer case. jeez

That's an oil leak. I'd be pretty pissed if the dealer was saying it was normal.

I would ask what qualifies a 'seep'. Oil dripping off a component is not a seep in anybodys book, including Toyota's. Sometimes you have to ask rhetorical questions to make the service techs and mangers understand you are not an idiot.

    That’s interesting.

But you can say this with 100% certainty.

The timing chain cover and valve cover gaskets on our 2013 tundra were leaking at 30k. Must have been made on a Monday, lol, no issues since.

I have put about 800 miles on it since initial visit, got under it a few days ago ago it saw no oil or fluid leak or seep like before so far. I did keep these pictures and have it well documented that this was an issue before bumper to bumper runs out this year for me 12/23/19. But i would still have 5 year / 60k powertrain to cover me so i should be good. Only will file a claim with Toyota corporate if i have to. I am sure once it leaks enough they will fix it for me. Not worried at the moment, will watch it closely. my thought is maybe it will leak worse in winter cold weather metal extreme contract and expansion with heat cycles.

It was definitely gear oil, i wiped it off that black bracket and i had slight gear oil smell and viscosity to it. I am a prior ASE master tech i think i have seen or thing or two ;)
