Bigger tires... New gearbox????

i have a 2001 toyota tacoma already with a 5 inch lift and 33 inch tires. just wondering if i were to make a step up to 35's... would i need a new gearbox?

 

Do you have stock gears still? You don't necessarily have too but if you want the power and gas mileage back you should! I had 33s on my 07 and gas and power was still the same to me. Now I have 35s and powerloss and mpg sucks ass! I will be regearing next week tho.

 

so what are the stock gears? and what would you switch to?

 

THe 3.4L manual tranny non TRD trucks had 4.11 gears. Atleast, my 96 tacoma has 4.11.

Your automatic might be different. Search the internet, you'll find it out there.

I've got a 01 double cab TRD 4wd V6 with 35" tires running 4.11's and the power is okay. Not like it was when it was stock, but not bad either!
I get around 15-17mpg depending on how fast I drive and how heavy my right foot is.
I am going to regear to 4.88's when I save up some $$

 

Mine has 4.10's

 

I have 33s & stock 4.10s on my 3.4 dcab & I can't stand it on any incline. But then again I'm auto & we tend to drive faster here in Socal. I assume you're truck is manual so you won't feel the difference as much as auto. No more towing for me until I get the 4.56s, can't wait.

 

No, mines an auto as well.. Only thing done to the motor is an exhaust system, K&N filter, and some eBay no name chip that I guess helps out??
I live in Ohio where it's mostly flat... So, I don't feel any "huge" power loss. I did just drive it 500 miles round trip to Pa and some of the freeway drive was "hilly". It did good, but would shift down a gear every time going up the hills.
I know 4.88's would do me good, but it's not that big if a problem yet to where I'm rushing out to the store to get new gears installed.

 

Ah I see. I live in a Valley so there's mountains every which way I get out of the valley to go wheel. Plus towing toys to the dunes I'll definitely suffer unless I regear.

I hear ya, not too bad on the gears but I'll need a master install kit which is about the same price as the gears & then labor which would cost more than the gears, it all adds up. And man for you, you would also have to do the front too. I wouldn't be looking foward to that either.

 

yeah, still got stock gears. i'd rather not re gear my truck unless i absolutely have to. i'm not sure if its different from my truck to yours since you have an 07 vs my 01. do you know roughly how much re gearing would cost roughly?
