Yeah. 99% sure it’s just that housing that is different...

Can someone point me in the right direction? Who knows how to remove the sleeve that’s over the input side of the transfer case on 1st gens? I’m pretty sure it needs to be removed before you bolt the crawlbox up to it

Can either weld a nut on the end and use a long threaded bolt to press that sleeve off. Or can cut a small notch on the outer of the sleeve and use a punch to slide it off.

The coupler? If so, I drove a screwdriver behind it answer then beat it off with a punch.

Coupler for the trans output-tcase input shafts.

I used a vice grip, screw driver and hammer to knock mine off.

I remember asking you about that. Also remember it took more force to get it started than I was comfortable giving it. Came right off after I got it moving though.

Get some heat on the coupler then get some channel locks on it. Tap the channel locks with a hammer and it'll pop off.

Make sure you use plenty of rtv when you put the new coupler on.

A bearing splitter will also work if you have one of them and plan to re-use or re-sell the coupler.

Could use some advise. This sleeve doesn’t fit inside the transmission. Trail gear is giving me the run around. The instructions never talked about taking apart the fkn trans

    Auto transmission correct?

You'll need to remove the housing adapter that goes from the trans to the factory tcase. Inside of there is a C clip with a bearing and seal that needs to be removed in order for the new coupler, aluminum seal housing, and seal to fit correctly.

Sorry if I sound like a moron, I kinda am and I don't have the truck in front of me. What you're saying sounds completely outside the realm of what the instructions are saying (I trust TW more than these trail gear guys at this point). I pulled the stock coupler off the stock t case, that's in one of the photos. But just to clarify I have to remove this bearing out of the back of the trans?

Edit: sorry yeah its an auto

Yes that's correct. For autos, that bearing is too small of an I.D. for that new coupler.

Thanks for the link, that actually looks really helpful. I still can't do step 4 though as that coupler doesn't fit in the trans. Sorry if i'm missing something obvious new to all this

So it looks like there's a piece of the trans (between the bell housing area and the stock t case) that I can remove to get that bearing out without pulling the entire trans, is that right?

No worries, you made me question my own knowledge when I thought you were 5-speed. Auto trans instructions start on step 6 in that pdf
