Kinda wondering what my Taco is worth

I have a 2002 Tacoma 2nd owner, 80,000 original miles 2wd pearl Red. Clean as a whistle. Interior looks like it just came out of the showroom floor. Paint is good. No dents. It has bubble rust on both rear fender no holes yet. The frame is solid. Automatic. Has aftermarket Bluetooth stereo for Apple or others make phones. Also has maps built into it. No other rust on the body except a dime size place on front of inside rocker step near the hinge. Everything on it works perfect. I know price on these trucks vary a lot from state to state. I went to Ohio to get mine all others I found here in Tennessee in anything close to this kinda shape was nearly double what I paid for mine. That’s what I’m interested in how much it vary around where all you guys are from. For instance every truck around here anything like this was Almost $4,000 more than what the three I found up north was and finally bought this one.

 

With the rust in the bed, extended cab and 2wd I'd guess around $3,000 MAYBE $3,500 to the right buyer.

 

Folks in Ohio or rust belt states usually go to your state or other generally rust free states and pay a little extra to avoid the rust, but you wanted to get the price break and get the rust. Gonna be harder to sell with the rust. Rust is Tacoma's number 1 enemy unfortunately

 

It is worth half of what a rust free one is in your area is worth just like when you bought it.

Nah 5-6k easily. A 4wd regardless if rusty or not with 80k will fetch 10k or more to the right buyer. A lot of people couldnt care less about rust, unfortunetley.

 

When was the last time you looked under that plastic bedliner? I wanna see what it looks like... and so will potential buyers.

Conventional wisdom would say that those plastic bedliners breed rust.

 

Every truck I've ever bought that had a plastic bedliner it was the first thing to go. Can't stand them, everything slides around. I never understood the logic, you put it in to protect the bed but if you take it out there's paint rubbed off and possibly rust. I prefer just a rubber bed mat to keep stuff from sliding and who cares about the paint in the bed, it's a truck.

 

How do you know the frame looks good? OP didn't post a pic of the frame.

It's pretty typical for the frames to rust out before the body does. I've seen MANY swiss cheese frames where the body is in near perfect condition. So when I see rust ANYWHERE, I'm highly suspicious. Also, since the frames rust from the inside-out, you can't always tell just by looking.

I certainly wouldn't take the sellers word that "the frame is good" lol... Get a hammer and start tapping around... I've seen posts where someone buys a truck from a DEALER who said the frame is "fine" - hint: it wasn't...

But back to the OP's question: It's only worth what someone is willing and able to pay for it. Get a hammer and check your frame, don't just go by looks, and be upfront with sellers about that, and let them tap around themselves.

Put it up for $4k. If no one bites on it, it's worth less (so lower your asking price). If you get 40 calls a day on it, it's worth more than that (raise your asking price, start a bidding war).

 

you make it impossible to declare a frame to be good with that statement. the op says the frame is solid, its his truck so im going off what hes saying. hes the one asking how much his own truck is worth, so I would assume he would want to say the condition it is in accurately, otherwise i could care less.

 

Impossible? No, just tap on the frame with a hammer. Pretty easy, really.

I base my statements off the many many trucks I've seen with rusted out frames, but the body is in great shape. I've also seen plenty of posts where people ask if the body rust is something to be concerned about, then someone asks "how's the frame" and OP responds with "so... about that frame replacement program..."

It's nothing against the OP personally, but every used car I've ever bought I pretty much ignore what the seller says. In fact, I'd prefer they not be there trying to tell me their story of why they think their truck is worth $1000 more than than it really is, lol

I said the frame was good because I put it in a lift went over the frame with a ball pin hammer no issues anywhere. And for whoever said $3,000 I say lol to that the cheapest I found a truck any half the shape this one is around here was $6,000 k that’s why I ended up in Ohio to get this one. If I could find some bed sides I’d replace them and have the painted but Toyota doesn’t carry them anymore for this model. I can’t find aftermarket ones either. The bed is fine under the plastic bed liner no issues there either.

 

You guys must have plentiful Toyota around where some of you live because both dealerships can’t keep one on the lot here for a day after there are traded in and they sell them for what u all would say are simply insane prices.

 

That was me. I still say $3,000-$3,500. It’s a grocery getter, you can’t pull anything with it. I’d get stuck in it the first time I took it where I deer hunt. It may be worth more to someone else but I’m telling you what it’s worth to me. After all, you did ask “what’s my taco worth”.

Not trying to come across mean or ugly. You ask a question, me and several others answered it.

 

This is completely true and validated, your opinion is. These Tacomas barely ever sell by blue book right, its usually higher. Which means they are really valued at *whatever someone is willing to pay* for it. So, then the 70 year old man comes along that knows toyota is reliable and desires a easily accessible 2wd tacoma bed height, will never go hunting, and wants to haul feed from Tractor supply back home. Prices of these things are so subjective. I was selling a 1st gen and had it listed with a FIRM PRICE tag. Older man come to me to look at it and wouldn't stop offering less and then laughed in my face about what i wanted for it, i wasn't phased because I knew someone who wanted one bad enough would come get it. Two days later sold it for my FIRM and "HIGH" price I wanted. Its primarily I think about the frame with these things anyway which he says is good and with those low miles, people just freak out.

 

Well said and you're exactly right. They make so many models with so many options by so many companies because not everybody wants the same thing and we all have different needs with our vehicles
