ok....lety me start by saying.....today was a bad day in the woods for me. rut started here, 6 does came in, then a nice 8 pt. came in chasing them. long story short....i shot the 8pt, but in the process, hit a small 3/4inch sappling first, cut it down, then hit the deer. he hit ground, kicked for a few seconds, then pushed himself to the woods, got up and ran. tiniest spot of blood right where he hit the ground when i hit him..............so, im thinking since it hit the tree first, the bullet deflected and stunned the buck for a bit. we looked for him thru close to a square mile, thru the swamp and thru all the thickets for 4 and a half hours.........no blood trail at all. it makes me believe he is still out there walking around, maybe nursing a small wound right now, but he'll be back. and trust me.........i had the sickest feeling on my stomach ever........i never wanna see a deer run off never to be found and just die. that kills ma.........but im pretty sure with this one, he'll be fine and seen again.

so my question is this............with all the walking thru that we did today on the property where we figured the buck ran, and its gonna be 38 degrees here tonight and in the am, and keep in mind the rut in on now......ya'll think our scent will be outta there and deer will be moving again?? im going back in the am and sitting in my blind, and im gonna set out my thermascent with some tinks 69, and some doe estrus close by, so is it possible with the activity of walking thru today...............what are the odds deer will be moving again??

I bowhunt as well, and if it was me if the rut is going on full blown, those bucks shouldn't be too worried about it if they are trailing a hot doe. That will be all that is on his mind. Take your chances and cover up with some scent killer or dead down wind is what i use.

yeah, i was totally invisible when the does came in and the big buck was chasing them this am. i use scent killer and scentshield all the time....works really well. im just hoping that since we were walking all thru deer trails today, that our scent is gone by tonight....it was pretty windy this afternoon.....and the deer are moving again in the am. this was gonna be my first buck....had spikes before, but never a nice buck as this one was.

something i did to my clothes box........i put a fresh earht scent wafer and a doe estrus scent wafer in there and closed the lid tight. gonna be off the ground again in my blind, so the clothes should smell good and ready for a buck to come closer.

IM sorry to hear about your buck getting away. I have shot several nice bucks with a rifle. I only shot one buck last year, a 3 point last year with my bow. I have only been hunting with a bow for two years now and have killed several hogs and that small 3, however I got a doe yesterday morning. I am still looking for a nice 8 i had on camera last year.

yeah man....that feeling definitely isnt a good one. i just hope like hell my thinking was right and he was just stunned for a bit. i shot with my .270........and im thinking with it blowing thru that tree, it slowed down just enough to stun him, and deflect the bullet to not hurt him badly. dammit...i didnt even see that damn little sappling when i had him in my cross hairs. i'm going in tomorrow, and hopefully, with the rut in now....they will be moving again.

I will start by say that i know how you feel about them just dieing!! It sucks... I my opinion i think tha if rut is in the deer have one thing on their mind your scent prob wont matter, however you may have spooked the but out of his terriory for awhile but he will be back!!!! Anyhow good luck!!! And i hope you get reunited with him!!!

im gonna aim for it man!! when we were looking for him this am.....we found alot of different tracks, and they were several good bucks thru there. and the rubs on the tress were crazy, so i know there is more than one buck in the area now. im just hoping they come thru again.

i have been bow hunting now for 3 years....only got the doe last year with it, and since my neck surgery a couple weeks ago, pulling bow back is still tough....so im glad gun season is in now.

Between the rut and the rifles ringing, the deer are probably moving in unpredictable patterns anyway. I would think that you would be okay as long as you scentblock everything really well.

well....i went this morning, but didnt see anything. im not real surprised though, as we were on basically all the territory and all the deer trails while we were looking for that 8. gonna give it a couple more days to calm down and get the deer moving back thru the area, and hopefully this weekend, me or canuckinsc will see some and have some luck.

That sucks you never found him man... I know how you feel about leaving him out to die without finding him.

Nothing teaches you to be a better shot, than tracking the one you barley hit! :D
