I was up too, and I was thinking the same thing. Less than 20 posts and he's trying to sell worn out tires and ugly wheels. Maybe I was just cranky though.

Anybody know ARs? I don't but I want to make this long range gun more of a personal/home defense gun. It was a built up from scratch gun so I think I legally will not have an issue turning it into a pistol if I want but I do have some questions. Namely what parts do I need? I could keep it simple and just buy a new upper but I could probably save some money just getting a new barrel and foregrip right? I know I'll need to swap the stock to a brace too. Any help is appreciated, also if yall have any parts to sell/trade let me know.

You can't turn a rifle into a pistol...but you can turn a pistol into a rifle. You'd need to start with a new receiver and put the pistol parts on that.

    Stupid rule, I know.

You can turn a rifle into a pistol if it was never a rifle to begin with. This lower was purchased as a lower not a complete gun, then built up from there by a friend of a friend. So I think this will be legal as there is no way to know (or prove) it was ever a rifle. At least that is my understanding?

Well, you just posted a picture of it built as a rifle, so you just negated that method...LOL

I'd just swap the complete upper for a 10.5" and get one of those arm brace thingys.

I've been out of the gun game for a while now...used to shoot at a private range in Lewisville every weekend for a couple years. Then ammo got hard to find and expensive.

Changing the barrel, hand guard, and stock to a brace should get you where you need to be.

Since you’ll be changing the barrel, you might as well switch to .300 blackout and grab a suppressor.:anonymous::spending:

I may not be being clear. This lower was never registered as a rifle. Make sense?

Trying to avoid the stamp hassle if I can, otherwise I'd just make it a SBR.

I definitely don’t blame you there.

I don’t know if you are wanting more of a budget build or you want to cherry pick your parts, but as @SearArtist said it would be easiest just to change the whole upper.

I would just buy a new upper. Depending on what length you decide to go, your going to have to put in a carbine/pistol gas system and likely tune that so it runs decent.

Unless you are set on it, I would look at another caliber if you are wanting to go short barrel. 5.56/2.23 is not terrible (nobody wants to get shot with any caliber), but there are better performing calibers out there for SBRs.

Can I use the same lower if I swap calibers? Like will the mags fit?

There is no "registration" in NC, it depends on how the original purchaser of the receiver marked on the 4473. If they did it as a long gun, then you can't make it into a pistol.

I'd just buy a new receiveer and go ahead and Form 1 it, and collect the short barrel stuff while you wait.

I believe you can e-form now for SBR...like I said, it's been a while. I waited almost a year for my .22LR can.

If you go 300 BLK or 6.8 yea. You can even put in a pistol caliber upper and use your lower. You will not be able to use the same lower with 7.62 though.

I built a 5.45x39 AR many years ago. It was a blast to shoot and cheap as AF ammo, but then Obama banned the cheap imported surplus ammo...that ruined the fun and I sold it :(
