4x4 or 4x2

It seems like the majority of Taco owners on this web site drive a 4x4. So I'm curious how many drive what. And of coarse of voted first.

 

ill never go back to a 2 wheel drive!

 

4 x 4 or get a mini van

 

This time I bought a Pre-Runner, suits my needs perfectly. Not to dis 4x4 Tacos, but for serious 'wheeling I'd prefer a 4x4 with a solid front axle and a very short wheelbase. Like an FJ40 for example.

 

I got to give Toyota credit...if it wasn't for the Prerunner model, they would lose a large segment of their buyers.

The Prerunner is the best looking non 4x4 small/mid-size truck out there.

Having said this...I bought a 4x4.

I could have bought a Prerunner with more goodies for the same money as my SR5 4x4...but it's a truck and I wanted maximum utility.

That, and I spotted this Pyrite Mica SR5 at a local dealership and bought it the next day.

Love having a truck for all the versatility.

As to 4x2 or 4x4, I don't see a need for it as I don't really go off road. Then again, I'd be hesitant to take an expensive and nice truck off in the mud. That's just me though.
It's all good. I'd have it if I lived somewhere where it would be useful.

 

prerunner here. No need for 4x4 around here. with enough momentum you can get through pretty much anything you need to around here its all _______flat

 

I am an amateur paleontologist (fossils) so I use mine to get to remote places in the desert and mountains to go fossil hunting.

The farther I can drive, the less I have to hike.

 

Definitely 4x4. I've needed one ever since i started driving.

 

Needed a 4x4 so I got rid of my 4x2 Ford. I'm never buying 2wd again. This climate requires a 4x4 in the winter

 

4x4. I couldn't live without it.

 

I will admit the pre-runners do look nice, and as stated before the best looking 2wd trucks i think out there

But for me, using all the time or not, i would skimp on options to get 4x4 instead, or buy something older to get everything i wanted (note owning the 1st gen but paid off)

If snow is a possibility, 4WD is good to have, and in some cases a necessity.

If I lived in an area with no snow, I might consider a Prerunner. It's fairly rare that I use 4WD outside of winter.

 

Didn't really have a need for 4x4. Going hunting, a 2wd with a limited slip has never failed me so Prerunner it was.

 

With a good set of tires and some smart driving I can get everywhere in my Prerunner that I did in my 4wd Jeep. If I ever need to get further back in the woods I'll find an old Land Cruiser or FJ and use that. As for a DD 4x2 is all I need.

That is the truth - my first truck was a '73 F-250 2wd that had an aftermarket limited slip (from previous owner) and it was a great beast for general running the rivers and regular mudding. There was more than a couple times I would help pull someone out of the mud or give them a ride to the nearest farmer for a big John Deere.

As for me now, I'm enjoying my SR5 PreRunner. While it may not be the "cool 4x4" - I can count the number of times on one hand that I've seen enough snow to make me need a 4x4 in Central Texas. Generally, if there is that much snow around here nobody is open anyways. So, for the 50k highway miles a year that I do, I chose the PreRunner.

 

Depends on my needs...............I know longer live in snow country so I have switched back to a 4x2.........

 

i have had 3 previous tacomas, all 4x4s. the only time i ever needed 4wd wqas when i lived in virginia. never needed it here in louisiana, so i went to a prerunner with more options and a sexy red paint job and haven't hesitated once. i figure the rear diff locker and auto lsd should suffice for me.
