Excessive Pinging

Have a 94 p/u with a 22r that pings like a SOB. Timing is correct, no check engine light issues. Do these have a knock sensor and if so where would it be?

 

I'm guessing that with the age of that beauty and the work it has to do-you have carbon buildup on the pistons which can possibly raise the compression ratio enough to cause detonation. do a search on "Seafoam" I read that stuff works the ping right out! I don't know if that engine had knock sensors yet but Chris 4x4 will be along shortly to button up an answer for you

 

Lol, yea it's my beater truck with 208k probably up to 11:1 comp but runs fantastic except for pinging like hell...but it stops pinging when I run 100 Octane Trick Unleaded! I'll check out "Seafoam"...thanks

 

Sounds like a plan buddy if you can clean out a good lot of that carbon and bring down that compression the ol' faithful wil be purring again!!!

 

seafoam will do a great job of cleaning out all the carbon. also, you may want to run a bottle of techron thru the gas tank to clean the injectors and all, as that will help too.

 

When you guys run Seafoam, do you only do 1/3 of the bottle into the brake booster, or do you do the 3 differnt parts (brake booster, fuel, and some other part)?

 

when i do mine, i'll usually do half in thu the booster, or sometimes a 3rd thru booster, then rest in the gas tank. i dont add it to my oil. half thru the booster worked for me when i first got my truck,since it was running rough, so i did a couple of applications, and it definitely helped with the way the truck ran.

you can get it cheapest at wal mart...but autozone and most all auto parts store carry it.

no prob man. very easy to do.......but jsut a heads up......directions say to use some in the oil......unless you have alotta sludge build up, or you have really high miles, i wouldnt use it in the oil. it may clean good, but if the mileage is high, it could clean too good around the seals. just a possibility........and with these newer engines, i think with any good oil, its not really needed. now thru the brake booster and in the gas tank....most definitely.
