Ohhhh, I misunderstood you, sorry. So how far away are they? Is it drivable? Or just not worth the drive? Seems like a cool road trip if you can set it up. Of course waiting for the mail man drinking a beer in the A/C is also cool, pardon the pun.

And what about that break in period? 10 miles 5 times = 500 miles? I was confused by that statement in the vid. Or did he mean drive it 10 miles 5 times letting it cool down each time then after another 450 miles change the fluid? Also, does this apply to lockers as well? I would like to regear for larger tires some day but would also like to add e-lockers. That's a long way off of course but still something I have dreamt about.

It ended being the same cost to ship them the diffs vs having to pay sales tax if I drove there. That's not taking gas or time into account, so shipping made the most sense.

I didn't watch the video, but 5x10 makes no sense. The break in period is to do a very light initial run for 15-20 minutes, followed by a 35-40 minute cool down. Then from there just gently cruise, not driving more than 50 miles at a time without letting it cool down. Once you hit 500 miles, you change the gear oil and they're broken in.

Ok, he was definitely a little excited at the results in the vid so I suppose they let the post production slide a bit to enhance the final results. Sounds like the 500 miles thing though is a common denominator. Maybe he meant to say 50 miles 10 times. Either way it sounds like even I couldn't screw that up. One thing he pointed out was that before the regear the truck on flat ground in drive/reverse would not budge on it's own, but after it would actually move along like stock. Have you found that to be the case? He also said he was able to get it to hold 2 grand going up a hill whereas before it would be much higher.

So it sounds to me like regearing to 5.29s basically makes the truck act with 34's/35's like it did with 31's ?????? Is there any detrimental effects to this? They were definitely pushing this as the first mod every Tacoma owner should do. I can't believe this is the holy grail. Or is it? Oh, they said for the average guy with a lighter load and not 35's that 4.88's would be the preferred gearing. Thoughts?

For the break in process, since I have to baby it so much, I haven't gotten the greatest feel for it. What I do know is that it DID make a huge difference. Before I would be going 65mph, 4th gear, 3k RPMs. Now I'm 65mph, 6th gear, 2900 RPM. HUGE difference in gearing. I knew that going into it though.

For you, since third gens are different, the general rule of thumb that I've seen is 4.88 for 33s and a light load (I'd consider your truck a light load) and 5.29s for anything more than that. It will make quite a difference, but in your situation I think the OVTune would be more beneficial, and much less expensive. @UntamedTaco can chime in

Well, we all know the ultimate goals ( in a couple years little by little ) are:
Cap w/awning and 5 gal water port, Tube Front Bumper w/Winch, Rear HC w/dual Swingouts, and ultimately 33's minimum (but likely 34's or 35's). Then add all the camping gear, dual batt setup/solar.

Yes, it's a huge ass wish list but I am keeping this truck and want to make it travel worthy. I won't say the O word here or out loud yet but I have said it to myself in my head.

Those plans of the wife and my cousin, her best bud spending time together on weekends and such have become more solid than ever and that was a huge hurdle for me to get away clean for long wheeling trips without worry or guilt. Who knows, I may see Texas, New Mexico or the Carolinas yet!

@RobP62 You don't have OVTune? We need to get together and let you drive my truck. Tune 1.05 was a Godsend! With the heavy 33's I really felt I needed to regear but then I loaded the 1.05 tune - REALLY pleased with it.
I still may regear in the future but now I no longer feel I NEED to.

Pulled the trigger on a hypertech speedo calibrator. My speedo is about 20% off and it’s really hurting my ability to gauge how fast I’m going since what gear I’m in+RPM=speed is engrained into me as a manual driver. It’ll say I’m going 82-83 when in reality I’m going 69-70.

I'm still rocking an old garmin gps. I get my speed off it. Problem is I'm constantly looking for it in my DD. I need to run Waze more with android auto. Shows little police helmets at speed traps. Soon the cops will figure put they can download waze and keep marking it as not there. Funny thing is I moniter my temps more than speed lately. Just ordered a combo trans / oil cooler. That will be my last OCD temp control mod. Better safe than sorry I guess.

This is my temporary solution, but it just wasn’t doing it for me. I found myself driving way too slow.

Come on down Rob and get some gears. I'll pick you up at the shop and we can go across the street and get some grub and send some freedom lead down range. They are in my neck of the woods. Great guys and killer company.

Been running one of them for years. Never had an issue it. Last time I had the dash apart I plugged the usb cable into it and ran it to the drivers kick panel so I can plug my laptop in and re calibrate it easily should I ever change tire size or regear in the future!

Over these planos. Both were filled like this. Spare parts rusty and recovery gear moldy. Going to eventually replace with pelican cases. Deciding what I want to do with them in the mean time, may take them down.
