What up! Yeah man, those are hard to beat for the money. Best is to buy at least two.
One for backup or of someone doesn’t have one. Handhelds are useful for a spotter to talk to the group as well, in cabs cannot be used by a spotter. Also useful to hike with, however they aren’t a Sat phone, so for emergencies it would be best to have a higher wattage one. Wattage is sort of equivalent to Range. They make Handhelds that are cheap and 8watts. The ones I have are 5watts, which work fine for my use.

FYI - by law you need a license to Broadcast (aka Talk) over Hams. Reason being, is that there are many channels you should not use, they are specifically used by Law/Emergency/Broadcast/Etc

However, it is not illegal to use them to Listen to or use for Emergencies purposes. Just wanted to give the scoops.

Also, I noticed your up in NC. I have a place up there above Asheville I am at all the time. If your ever in the area hit me up. I do a lot of trail riding up there, mainly on my bikes.

Good info, thanks! So we need a license if we were to all meet up and ride trails while using the hand held??

Lol, just get the handhelds if that interest you. Not everyone has one (NC or ham) by any stretch in our group and it’s no biggie. We just get in a line and roll out.
For the price I would buy a couple from that link, and look up Ham License Test, Incan also point you to a good thread, if you would like to Know/Use Hams.

Most people don’t understand that a Ham radio isn’t like a CB, in regards to restrictions. With that said, get into it.
Why the hell not, it’s cheap and a cool thing to have. It could really aid you in lots of ways.
Besides, if the shit hits the fan, those that know Ham will still be able to receive news/signal/communicate. That is if the towers/repeaters are still up.

I actually just spent my lunch break looking up the test. Haha.. Interesting for sure. I used to mess around when I was a kid with my first car and a CB radio. Used to mess with truckers on the interstate for some good fun! I'm going to grab at least one of those hand helds.
