Basically the second one. It's part of why you shouldn't buy a used one; you never know what sort of shape the foam is in.

If Klim Gear hasn't made a humidifier for their helmets then no one will, believe me

    Correct.
Dropping/impact, you can send it to the mfr, and they can/will inspect it.
But, had to replace my mtbike helmet this past weekend. New one just arrived.
I need to drop the Trek off tomorrow morning. If I leave it to myself, itll be november before I get to it.
Glad I have a second bike.

The 5 year limit is a guideline because of the UV breakdown of the outer shell. It's not hard and fast and will depend on use. If you drop it, you can get some of them checked out. The reason is, it's like an air bag, there's some part of the helmet build up that compresses on initial impact and does not decompress. So, if you keep using it after that layer of protection has been compressed, it can't do it's job if you actually need it to absorb another substantial impact, meaning your head will take a lot more force.

I would imagine some of the new carbor fiber shells are built to last longer also as they are more UV stable. Our construction hard hats have the same limitations, they're supposed to be replaced every 5 years but the carbon fiber ones will last a lifetime or until physically destroyed. Not sure if the UV stability is the same for carbon fiber motorcycle helmets.
In theory, yes, as long as it's properly stored and maintained.

If anyone is in the area, I’ll be riding Kingdom Trails in Burke VT this weekend, commuting to and from Derby VT to stay with the in-laws. I’ll be parked in the Tiki lot Saturday and Sunday...
